Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev gave his fans a shock earlier today after a photo of him donning a new look went viral. In what appeared to be a screenshot from an Instagram Live, fans got to see the 31-year-old ditch his previous hairstyle and go completely bald.

What got fans talking was the fact that he looked eerily similar to featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski, who he had recently defeated at UFC 284. As the image started doing the rounds, MMA fans had a field day online, as many pointed out the similar features between him and Volkanovski.

The fact that Makhachev, who has pretty much carried a consistent look over his MMA career, decided to shave off his hair out of the blue was indeed a surprising thing for fans to see. But it was the keen eye of the fans that got the comments under the Reddit section rolling.

The majority of the reactions were references to Makhachev’s and Volkanovski’s rivalry, while a few also trolled him for his choice of style.

One fan made a reference to one of Nate Diaz‘s famous comments while pointing out the similarity to Volkanovski

“Taking everything Volkanovski worked for”

A creative individual even came up with a unique name for Makhachev.

“Islam Volkhachev”

“In order to beat volkanovski you need to become volkanovski”

“He will turn into bald fraud. It’s a curse”

“Bald islam is mythical fighter . All goats were bald at most of times”

“bro thinks he’ s volk”

One fan claimed it would be confusing if the two fought once again in the future.

“Legitimately thought that was Volkanovski, f****n hell the rematch will be confusing.”

“He’ll have a full head of hair by this evening.”

Will fans get to see a Makhachev and Volkanovski rematch?

The duo had clashed earlier this year at UFC 284, which went down in Australia in front of the featherweight champ’s home crowd. In what was a very closely contested fight, Makhachev had emerged victorious, much to the disappointment of the crowd attending the fight.

Following the bout, there were calls for a rematch from different sections of the fans owing to how close the two were from a skills perspective. Although there has not been any official confirmation of who both fighters will face next, the general consensus appears that they should fight a contender in their respective divisions.

Despite that, the idea of a rematch still sounds extremely mouth-watering for MMA fans, and hopefully, the UFC could match up these two warriors at some point in the future once again.
