The world witnessed yet another generous act by Conor McGregor as he swooped in to help John Cooney. Well, the fighting world isn’t for the faint-hearted or the weak-bodied. It’s filled with stories of severe injuries and in some cases, even the loss of life. This time, Cooney, a 28YO boxer from Galway entered the ICU with intracranial hemorrhage. To help the boxer with his treatment, a fundraiser was started with the goal to raise £70K ($87K). And ‘The Notorious’ was one of the biggest contributors to the fundraiser.
Cooney fought in BBBoC Celtic Super featherweight title fight on Saturday. But his injuries put him in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. A prompt treatment is something that helps in the recovery of patients with intracranial bleeding. But it’ll still take about 2-4 weeks or even more, with a gradual rate of recovery. Needless to say, the boxer was fighting for his life. The doctors claimed that “the next 24 hours are critical.”
But McGregor was there to help with the cash. Taking to X, the former UFC double champion wrote, “Keeping Irish boxer and Galway native John Cooney in my thoughts and prayers for a full recovery.” In another post, he shared the link to the fundraiser for the public to donate. McGregor sent forth £20K ($24,858) towards Cooney’s aid. As of now, about 63% of the goal is achieved.
