Joe Rogan loves engaging in modern pop culture discourses. The UFC commentator is a fan of the ‘Game of Thrones’ series and its spin-off/prequel, ‘House of the Dragon’. What’s not to like about it? There are intense storylines, fierce battles, and mythological creatures. As someone who many once considered a ‘conspiracy nut’, Joe Rogan played into that very notion by professing his belief in the existence of a certain mythological creature that lies at the heart of the aforementioned HBO series.
On JRE #2227 with Adrienne Iapalucci, the UFC commentator tried to debunk the major claim that dragons are just mythological creatures. In fact, according to him, they might’ve been real and even lived alongside humans. True to form, Rogan said that he is fascinated with things that supposedly only existed in mythology but are still found in every culture, with one of these things being the mythical creatures we all know as dragons.
The UFC commentator backed his theory by referencing a previous guest on his podcast – “I had this guy, Forest Galant; he’s a wildlife biologist, and he thinks there’s a real possibility that dragons were an actual thing.” Not only that, he also claimed that they lived alongside humans. “That’s why there’s all these records in all these different cultures. Chinese culture has dragons; Japanese culture has dragons; ancient Europeans have dragons.”, Rogan continued.

However, Rogan pointed out one difference between the mythos and what he thinks is real. According to Joe Rogan, the dragon wasn’t a fire-breathing creature, but a large reptile that knew how to fly. “They’re probably like a crocodile that flies. There was probably more than one kind of really dangerous reptile that they called dragons. Like Komodo dragons—giant lizards—they call it a dragon, right? Crocodile – dragons. The question is whether or not one of them actually flew, ’cause we know that pterodactyls were a real thing. I think it’s probably something like that, you know, some kind of enormous bird-type creature.”
Pterodactyls belonged to the group of ancient creatures known as Pterosaurs – dinosaurs that developed the ability to fly, existing between approximately 226 to 66 million years ago. However, Rogan might not completely be out of his wits with his belief that dragons might have existed, because earlier in February, scientists uncovered fossils dating back 240 million years in China. The fossil was discovered with the whole creature intact and curled up resembling a Chinese dragon. However, it doesn’t lend credence to the notion that this dragon existed alongside humans, given the timeline.

The idea of mythological creatures existing in multiple cultures despite being a work of fiction seems like a plausible theory, especially based on new evidence presented above. And shows like ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘House of the Dragon’ have truly brought the creature into the limelight. But did you know that a ‘GoT’ actor actually wanted to be a part of the Joe Rogan Experience?
