Is Dustin Poirier's analyst role a sign he's stepping away from the octagon for good?

Amid rumors of his return to the octagon in Louisiana for his last dance, former UFC lightweight interim champion Dustin Poirier is once again ready to step in as an analyst for the upcoming UFC 308, headlined by Max Holloway vs. Ilia Topuria, scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi this weekend. Previously, Poirier filled this role at UFC 303 after being submitted by reigning lightweight champion Islam Makhachev earlier this summer at UFC 302.

The speculation about Poirier’s retirement increased when he took on the analyst role at UFC 303, suggesting he was leaning toward retirement, where he joined veterans like Teddy Atlas on the desk.

However, Poirier later refuted these rumors, claiming he would return to the octagon for “uno mas” or “dos mas,” which will probably happen next year. For now, fans will have to satisfy their urge to see Dustin Poirier on the analyst desk once again. According to recent reports released by MMA Junkie, Dustin Poirier will be joined by Chael Sonnen and Din Thomas on the desk for UFC 308’s post-fight show throughout the card when necessary.

‘The Diamond’ has been quite outspoken about his commitment to mixed martial arts even after retirement, which he recently reiterated during his last outing with Ariel Helwani. Poirier shared his thoughts about working in this field after retirement, whatever that may look like, and he also opened up about the possibility of facing opponents again.

Dustin Poirier on his future opponents

In his remarkable 13-year journey in the UFC, the lightweight has found himself in the most stacked division in the promotion. Amid this tumultuous path, Dustin Poirier has successfully carved out a reputation as “The Diamond.” The Louisiana native has established himself as one of the promotion’s most respected fighters, defeating some of the most dangerous competitors in the sport, including Conor McGregor, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje and Dan Hooker.

Despite his success, Poirier’s hunger for tough fights remains unfulfilled, as he still has his sights set on the hardest opponents in the division. While speaking to Ariel Helwani, Poirier revealed, “Nowadays, everybody in the UFC is dangerous. I’m not asking for a favorable fight; I want the hardest guys I can get. You know, I was asking for Gaethje, asking for Hooker. I want hard fights. I’m not trying to avoid getting beat up; I want a fight. It’s just the availability and the time frame; we’ll see,” Poirier pointed out.
