Alex ‘Poatan’ Pereira has moved up to the light heavyweight division from the middleweight division, following his loss to Israel Adesanya in their rematch. He will take on Jan Blachowicz tonight in the co-main event of UFC 291 in his first taste of light heavyweight. Jamahal Hill had to vacate the title after suffering a ruptured Achilles while playing basketball this month. The winner of their bout may fight for the title soon.

On the eve of their clash, the Sao Paulo native pointed out a trend in his and the 40-year-old’s career and how it might help him knock Blachowicz out.

Pereira was asked what he thought about the Pole proving to be a challenge to middleweights, looking to move up to light heavyweight. Confident as ever, the former middleweight champion instead pointed out that every time Blachowicz has been knocked out, it has been with a left cross, and every time Pereira has knocked someone out, it has been with a left cross.

“This thing about [Blachowicz] welcoming the middleweights to the division, I mean, I don’t believe in Superstition either. I don’t believe he should believe in superstition as well. Just like every time he got knocked out it was with a left cross, every time I knock somebody out, it’s with a left cross. If you think about it, you’re not gonna fight. So let’s focus on Saturday that’s what he needs to focus on,” he said in the pre-fight press conference.

“I think Alex hits harder, and it’s just the way he throws. The technique, he throws with the technique, he grounds himself, he’s not running, he’s not moving and throwing, he sits when he gets you where he wants you, especially against the fence.” he said.

The Kiwi did, however, note that Blachowicz’s superior all-around game will help if the fight goes to the judges’ scorecards. Other, such as former champion Hill, have predicted that Pereira’s power will not translate to the higher weight class. Whatever the result, this fight will determine the future of the light heavyweight division. The winner may face Jiri Prochazka or Hill for the vacant title. The Czech, like Hill, did not lose the title, but had to vacate it due to injuries.
