Nick Diaz is undeniably one of the best fighters during his time in the UFC and has always been a fascinating figure in the world of mixed martial arts. However, his personality seems to be a complete contradiction to the kind of fighter he was. The infamous ‘Diablo’ fought 38 fights in his two-decade-long career, culminating in his last fight against Robbie Lawler at UFC 266, where he lost the fight via a TKO. Diaz then put down his gloves, announcing his retirement with a 26-10-2 record under his credit.
As a competitor, Nick Diaz was surely fierce, just like his brother Nate Diaz, but one thing the two didn’t share in common was Nick’s dislike for fight promotion and interviews, something Nate didn’t seem to have a problem with. However, recently, the UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping revealed quite an interesting story about the former IFC Welterweight Champion.

Nick Diaz disliked the promotional aspect of the fight business so much that he went to extreme lengths to avoid it, causing the UFC some great trouble and costing him a title shot, too.
When Nick Diaz scandalously escaped the UFC press conference
Michael Bisping recently discussed the top 5 UFC scandals in his recent YouTube video, and one of the stories that made it to number 2 was the ‘No Show’ Nick Diaz incident. Bisping talked about the time when the elder Diaz brother was slated to face Georges St-Pierre for the welterweight title at UFC 137 in Las Vegas. Although it was an exciting opportunity, Nick didn’t like the idea of promoting the fight and doing interviews with the media.
“In 2011, the biggest fight the UFC could make was the Georges St-Pierre versus Nick Diaz for the welterweight title,” Bisping recalled. “Georges was far into his reign as the welterweight champ. Nick was on an 11-fight unbeaten streak outside of the UFC.”
Bisping went on to explain that Nick was not a fan of press conferences, and flights, and even refused to answer calls from the UFC itself. The UFC apparently put a plan in place to get Nick to the press conference in an attempt to get everything in line for the big event.
“Nick was going to stay at his mentor/trainer’s house, Ceaser Gracie. UFC would send staff to Ceaser Gracie’s house and together, they get him to the presser in Las Vegas. But with the car outside ready to go, Nick told them that he was going to use the bathroom and jumped out of the window and disappeared into the wind.”, said the UFC legend.

“Now apparently, there was a big, big search for Nick Diaz throughout his neighborhood. Every number was called, every house was visited and every potential hiding place searched… Now the UFC spent over $15,000 that week on flights, etc. that Nick Diaz didn’t show to.”
Despite his reluctance to engage in promotional activities, Nick Diaz’s reputation as a fighter remains unmatched and in many ways his aversion to the promotional aspects of the sport is a part of his enigmatic character.
