There is no denying the fact that MMA is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world. Those who compete professionally, especially in the elite class of UFC, have to go through countless fractures, surgeries, and physical setbacks that a normal individual cannot even imagine.
Recently, UFC veteran referee John McCarthy shed some bright light on this topic. In the #386 episode of the ‘Weighing In’ podcast, McCarthy discussed exactly how tough the sport of MMA can get. Moreover, he also shared his own experiences with injuries.

Delving into this less-talked-about topic, McCarthy hinted at the fact that when individuals put their bodies on the lines in combat sports, they suffer injuries that have a lifelong impact.
“When you use your body to make income through sport… There’s all kinds of ways and you can do that through all these different varieties of sports,” he said. “But when it’s a combat sport or a contact sport, you take the abuse that you eventually live with your entire life”, he added.
Going further, the former UFC referee also shared the kind of injuries he has suffered. Interestingly, McCarthy doesn’t even compete professionally. The injuries that he talked about all happened just because of his MMA training.

McCarthy’s personal experience underscored the challenges faced by athletes. Despite not participating in actual fights, he underwent a staggering series of surgeries—five knee surgeries, three ACL repairs, and three neck surgeries. Astonishingly, these were solely a result of training.

“I’ve had five knee surgeries, three ACLs, I’ve had three neck surgeries and I didn’t fight! All I did was train okay,” McCarthy said. “When you look at it and be honest about it and I’ve had you know so many different surgeries and stuff and every day I f*cking hurt,” he added. Moreover, he also shared that he suffers from headaches regularly.
“I’m not going to sit here and lie. I get headaches all the time. That is just part of life and you get used to it to a point because it becomes the norm. Everyone thinks it’s so easy,” he said. Luckily, the UFC is planning to improve health care for its fighters as per a recent revelation from Joe Rogan.
