Before his podcasting and comedy career, Brendan Schaub used to be a mixed martial artist. His resume even includes beating Mirko Cro Cop during an unimpressive stint at the UFC. You might also recall Joe Rogan, one of Schaub’s best friends sitting him down and having the infamous “you’ll be surprised” talk which led him to retire.

Another certified Schaub moment was his controversial claim after the UFC had inked a deal with Reebok as a kit sponsor, which led UFC boss Dana White to call him out. And Joe Rogan was puzzled at what White said. Let’s find out why.

Back in 2015, the UFC was able to onboard Reebok as a title sponsor. This was touted as a big step towards the sport gaining mainstream acceptance and respect by the UFC. Most fighters, however, were very upset with the deal. The agreement barred fighters from wearing or showing any other sponsors on their clothing or equipment. This eventually resulted in severe cash losses for many competitors who relied on sponsorship arrangements.

And one of the fighters to speak out was Schaub. The heavyweight claimed on Twitter that he made six figures from sponsorships on each fight before the deal. Dana White was later asked in an interview about the deal and how Schaub had claimed he was making six figures. The UFC boss proceeded to read out the names of Schaub’s sponsors and dismissed his claims with a sarcastic reply, implying Schaub was lying and did not in fact make six figures. This, of course, put Rogan, a good friend of both White and Schaub in a pretty awkward position.

Rogan later spoke to Schaub about this on his podcast. The UFC commentator was exasperated at his friends fighting and asked Schaub to make his sponsorship earnings public or at least make them known to Dana White.

“If somebody called me a liar, I would release the papers. If I knew that I had everything on paper that would show that I wasn’t a liar. It doesn’t make sense to call you a liar. It makes sense to ask you what you were getting paid and then. That’s like a rational conversation… The rational response to that is to just show.”

Schaub, however, was hesitant and refused even after Rogan asked him to make it public multiple times. Many fans, of course, were quick to allege that Schaub was in fact lying, and that is why he wouldn’t make the figure public.
