Colby Covington is confident that he’s going to become the next welterweight champion. But that’s not the only thing he’s sure about. In a recent interview with James Lynch, the fighter did not hold back. He has now dragged the Dagestani legend and made some big claims about the undefeated champion.
Covington is an entertaining pressure fighter who has a smooth way of trash-talking his opponents. Even fighters who aren’t his opponents as well as those who are no longer in the game. With ‘Chaos’ on a mic, everyone is a target, and this time none other than Islam Makhachev and Khabib Nurmagomedov are on his list.

Colby Covington is currently set to go up against the undisputed champ Leon Edwards. The title fight will go down on the 16th of December but before he takes on Edwards, he had a few things to say about Makhachev. The fighter felt that Makhachev wasn’t facing a “real man” in his division.
“There’s that little Mongol. He’s been talking a little bit,” Covington said, “saying that he wants to come up and fight in a real man’s division. Cause he’s sitting in a little boy’s weight class – and I’m talking about Islam Makhachev.”
‘Chaos’ was on about several different things during this interview. He mentioned how he trained Adriano Martins, the fighter who knocked out Makhachev. The fight ended in the first two minutes of the first round back at UFC 192 in 2015. Since then, fans have seen a lot of growth in Khabib’s teammate and the Californian wanted to drop his name in the conversation too.
“He’s (Makhachev) trying to ride the coattails of Khabib’s success and what he was able to accomplish,” the fighter said. “He’s not Khabib, it’s not the same thing you know. Khabib was scared of me. He didn’t want to come up to welterweight cause of me so, even his daddy knows that it’s not smart to come up to welterweight.”
Clearly, the fighter considers himself a threat to not just his division, but to all the other divisions as well. The fighter has never held a championship belt other than the time he was the interim champ back in 2018. However, he is sure that he can defeat any champ from any division as long as they come down to welterweight. Meanwhile, the Californian has shown no interest in changing weight classes himself.
