The events that followed the champion vs. champion fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Islam Makhachev at UFC 284 continue to cast a pall on an otherwise historic night in MMA history. The five-round slugfest between the pound-for-pound top dogs was an exhilarating display of elite-level martial arts.
In this contest for the ages, UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev emerged victorious over Alexander Volkanovski. However, the latter’s teammate, Dan Hooker, accused Makhachev of using IV to rehydrate for the bout.

The IV accusations, along with a section of the fanbase arguing Volkanovski won the fight, have been two major topics of discussion in the aftermath of UFC 284. While Volkanovski is leaning toward easing these heated debates, his coach Joe Lopez is taking a different path.
What did Alexander Volkanovski say about the fight?
To say that Alexander Volkanovski exceeded expectations at UFC 284 would be an understatement. The UFC featherweight champion showed incredible skill and heart to live up to his moniker, ‘The Great.’ The 34-year-old’s performance was enough to convince many that he had won the fight.
Many claimed that the judges robbed Volkanovski of a win. However, the featherweight champion himself has now shut down these debates. In a video on his YouTube channel, the Australian said, “Good, close fight… back and forth… You’re gonna hear people say, ‘Robbery!’ And things like this. Close fights like that, you can never say they’re robberies. Can you see it going my way? Yeah. Can people see it going his way? Yeah. That’s gonna happen.”
Volkanovski handled his loss with grace and seems to have accepted the decision. Meanwhile, his coach Joe Lopez has a few bones to pick with team Makhachev.

Volkanovski’s coach Joe Lopez has no soft corner for Islam Makhachev in the IV controversy. Lopez held nothing back in his comments against Makhachev and his camp. During a recent interview, the Freestyle MMA head coach claimed there was evidence of the violation by Makhachev and his team.
He said, “They got IVs, they can’t deny that..we know that for a fact, we’ve got that evidence…” He continued, “The way these guys are handling it, they’re trying to brush it underneath the table. If anything, they should take a stronger stance on who they are. Everybody should be treated the same, you can’t have rules for one and not for the other. If it doesn’t happen now, then for the future, it needs to change.”
While the issue remains a hot topic, no action has been taken against Makhachev and his entourage. Fans will have to wait and see what unfolds next in this saga.
