Did Elon Musk's Twitter takeover truly save democracy, or is it just a billionaire's power play?

While having a conversation with Elon Musk on ‘JRE #2223″, Joe Rogan, who endorsed the new President Donald Trump just days before the election, highlighted that his guest’s takeover of Twitter from Jack Dorsey was one of the most important takeovers for the netizens. The 57-year-old podcaster emphasized, “If it wasn’t for you buying that and changing Twitter, I don’t think we would be where we are at right now. I think it was a pivotal moment. I think, historically, when people look back at it, it’s gonna be a pivotal moment in this very bizarre fight for the freedom moment,” said Rogan.

Elon Musk commented that this move was a drastic measure needed to safeguard both national interests and the First Amendment. “Yeah, I mean, at the time, I said this is existential for the United States, and it’s existential to democracy because if you don’t have freedom of speech, you don’t have democracy. So, if people cannot have freedom of speech, people cannot be free,” said Elon Musk.

He further added, “If they are just fed propaganda, and if there’s no freedom of speech, democracy is an illusion. So, freedom of speech is the bedrock of democracy. That’s why freedom of speech is the First Amendment. Once you lose freedom of speech, you lose democracy. Game over. That’s why I owned Twitter.” The Tech-Mogul acquired the social media giant when the company was going through some legal hot waters.

Elon Musk confesses about community notes with Joe Rogan

What’s your perspective on:

Did Elon Musk's Twitter takeover truly save democracy, or is it just a billionaire's power play?

Have an interesting take?

Down in the same conversation, Joe Rogan initiated the discussion about the Community Notes feature of X which Elon Musk reintroduced in 2023 after taking control over Twitter.  The multi-million dollar podcaster emphasized that notes were one of the most important features introduced by Elon Musk, “Yes, Community Notes are awesome,” said Rogan.

He further added, “Community Notes, it’s the best! It’s incredible because everybody gets checked.” Musk reiterated his own experience of getting fact-checked by the open-source feature that doesn’t spare anyone – “Yes, including me. With Community Notes, all the software is open source, so you can recreate any given notes independently.”

The tech mogul further emphasized that some of the political figures asked him to change the notes guidelines but he never surrendered in front of them, “Absolute transparency in every way. Sometimes I get asked, ‘Can you remove a note?’ – mostly by the left, but sometimes by the right. I’m like, I don’t even remove the notes on my own account! Nothing! And by the way, everything is totally open, so if I did that, it would stick out immediately, like a sore thumb. It’s not going to be subtle.”

Community notes have been beneficial for the United States presidential elections as the amount of fake news that has been curbed by the notes is in the thousands. However, according to certain reports, the crowd-sourced community notes failed to curb misinformation specifically in the US elections. CCDH found that 74% of misleading posts lacked accurate corrective notes. 209 misleading posts gained 2.2 billion views without proper notes. It might all be in the rearview mirror after Trump’s historic win in the elections. Regardless, what’s your take on this? State your thoughts in the comments below.
