Conor McGregor‘s comeback is one of the most compelling narratives for 2025. After all, the Irishman remains the biggest superstar, by far, that this sport has ever seen. Out since 2021 after a horrific leg injury, the former champ-champ has been promising to make his UFC comeback since 2023. However, with McGregor’s upcoming rumored Logan Paul exhibition and his lifestyle recently, many, including his former foe Eddie Alvarez, do not think the Irishman will ever fight in the UFC again.
On being asked whether McGregor ever fight again in a recent interview, Alvarez had this to say. “Maybe the Logan Paul stuff I could see happening, but not anything else. Not anything on a competitive realm like that. I don’t think fans understand how difficult it is when you have the life he has. Nobody could be in Conor’s shoes, nobody,” ‘The Underground King’ said.
The late great Marvin Hagler famously said that it’s tough to get out of bed to do roadwork at 5 a.m. when you’ve been sleeping in silk pajamas. McGregor, by the unprecedented amounts of money he has made, is in the silliest of pajamas. And Alvarez, because of personal experience, is sure that the Irishman has lost the competitive flair that made him a mega-star.

“Even myself, look I’ve been a millionaire for a long time and it’s been hard. It’s way harder fighting like that than it was fighting when I was broke. It was so much easier for me to wake up broke and just be like ‘Hey, I’m going to kill everyone in front of me’ until I made some money,” he added. Alvarez makes some excellent points, but at this point, he is preaching to the choir.

Is there any truth to Alvarez’s claims regarding Conor McGregor?
Dana White has been saying for the longest time that it’s nigh impossible for McGregor to come back to the Octagon. This is in part due to the kind of money the Irishman has made. This is why an increasing section of fans feel that the prodigal son is never coming back. After all, if even the promoter is unsure whether or not their biggest-ever star will return to action, that says something.
But McGregor, on the other hand, is insistent that he will come back to the UFC. Even in the tweet announcing his intentions to face Logan Paul in a boxing exhibition, the Irishman promised that he would “seek his return to the Octagon” soon after the Paul fight. However, most fans are unconvinced.

Many feel that the Irishman, a marketing genius, wants to remain in the headlines by talking about a UFC return. Even though he has no intentions of doing so. Not to mention that there have been reports that ‘Mystic Mac’ will get $250 million for the Paul exhibition. And this could be another nail in the coffin of his UFC career. After all, if he can make that kind of money fighting outside the UFC, why would he ever come back to the promotion and fight world-class opponents for a fraction of that amount?
The only problem is that McGregor is still signed to the UFC and has two fights left on his contract. But then again, McGregor is an extremely wealthy man and Dana White is a reasonable businessman. The duo could well arrive at a dollar amount that McGregor could pay to be released from his contract. What do you think about Eddie Alvarez’s take on Conor McGregor’s UFC future?
