Dustin Poirier just gave a magnificent neck-to-neck fight against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 but unfortunately lost the bout in the final round. There are rumors and speculations from ‘The Diamond’ himself that he might be retiring soon, however, Chael Sonnen thinks otherwise. Poirier was looking for UFC gold in his third career attempt, and he had already hinted at his retirement before the bout. The 35-year-old was content with his family and other businesses and this was probably his last shot at a UFC title.

Meanwhile, Chael Sonnen believes that the former UFC interim lightweight champ is not completely done with the Octagon. According to Sonnen, ‘The Diamond’ is just done with 155 pounds and there is a possibility of change in weight class and fighting Poirier’s rival despite the former’s retirement comments!

The 47-year-old elaborated on the UFC 302 bout and talked about Makhachev’s and Dustin Poirier’s skill sets. He declared that Poirier was not too far behind his opponent when it came to skills. He noted, “He got an A in every category, Islam got an A+. So it’s very unique to look at because it didn’t take any time for Volkanovski to use Poirier’s name coming out of his mouth.”

The 47-year-old then went on to talk about how Volkanovski called on Poirier to have a bout with him in lightweight before Volk can have his go at featherweight again. Sonnen said, “Now Volkanovski just doesn’t call guys out. Volkanovski was very polite about Dustin. But it speaks to many things including a transition from Volkanovski up to 155 pounds. And see that’s one of the things that might be a problem. I think Dustin wants to look at 170.”

However, ‘Uncle Chael’ said that Poirier had previously told him that he was done with 155 and did not want to go to 170. As for the weight class change, Poirier has already done that with a switch to 155 pounds from 145 and did not wish to change weight classes anymore.

However, ‘The American Gangster’ also thinks that Poirier is not done with the UFC. There is another fighter who is his rival, who sits at 170 pounds, and it is not Conor McGregor. He thinks that Cajun mixed martial artist will return to fight at welterweight against Colby Covington!

Chael Sonnen hands Dana White a matchup between Poirier and Covington

‘The Bad Guy’ declared that ‘The Diamond’ was not done and was only saying his farewell to 155 pounds. He also said that Poirier is unlikely to call someone out however, Covington is present at 170 pounds and this could be a massive fight. He continued, “There’ll be others that fit that bill. But Dustin who is not comfortable at calling for those fights, might need somebody else to suggest it. But no! He’s not done with fighting. He’s just done with the lightweight division.”

These words by Sonnen gave some hope to the fans amid the hints by Poirier that he might be retiring. Even though ‘The Diamond’ was unsure of his retirement, his speech at UFC 302 was a tearjerker. Meanwhile, the timing of his fight with ‘Chaos’ if it happens, is up to him and UFC.
