Dustin Poirier, 35, is set to compete against BenoitSaint-Denis at UFC 299. The former interim lightweight title has faced some formidable opponents in his career. However, the question that arises then is, whether the 35-year-old is worthy of being a HoF’er. This question is highly debated and disputed. It is seldom to witness a fighter being inducted into the Hall of Fame despite never becoming a world champion. According to Michael Bisping, former Middleweight champion, Poirier has faced some credible and formidable opponents. However, there is more to it than meets the eye. For instance, one of his most impressive victories was his win against Conor McGregor. But Bisping suggests that the Irish Man was way past his prime at that time.
On his YouTube channel, he said, “A decision over Dan Hooker. What I’m saying is, is Conor McGregor the same Conor that was starching people at 145 pounds? Probably not.” He adds, “He’s probably got unsettled business with Conor McGregor. That would be another gigantic payday if McGregor ever does come back.
Bisping is quite opinionated and does not shy away from admitting his thoughts. However, it bears mention that McGregor himself, in the past, has snibbed at the idea of his rival being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Conor McGregor does not think Poirier is worthy of being in the Hall of Fame
According to McGregor, Poirier had been given ample opportunities to compete for the title. However, in all such title bouts, he was defeated. Apart from that, the Irishman gives him credit for beating him in the rematch but does not think his resume, apart from that fight is impressive enough for him to make it into the Hall of Fame.
“Never won an undisputed title. 0-3 in title fights,” McGregor wrote on Twitter replying to Ariel Helwani. “I disagree with the Hall of Fame. With all due respect, he has one solid win over me, where he was getting pucked around the cage before he got it, and then the second off a leg break. He’s done f*ck all Ariel. Not Hall of Fame, no way.”
This question is indeed drawing quite vehement responses. With so many distinct takes and perspectives, we ask you, do you think the American is worthy of being in the Hall of Fame despite not becoming a champion? Share with us your thoughts and opinions in the comments below.
