Dustin Poirier Confirms Retirement but Has One Condition Involving Conor McGregor & Islam Makhachev

UFC 302 saw Dustin Poirier submit to Islam Makhachev in what was likely the former interim lightweight champion’s last rodeo for the championship. Ahead of their clash, Poirier was giving hints that he would be retiring from the world of MMA soon, and seems like the day is not that far away.

‘Diamond’ wanted to retire with the belt wrapped around his waist but it never happened and now he will have to live with it. We witnessed Poirier at the UFC 303 analysis wing recently, indicating that he might be closer to a change of profession than we think. However, his recent social media escapades paint an interesting picture.

Dustin Poirier demands one condition for retirement

Dustin Poirier kept mum on his retirement after his defeat at the UFC 302, however, seems like he is finally moving toward it. The former interim lightweight champion took to his X handle to add a few tweets that exhibit that there’s a high possibility that he will be retiring soon. The ‘Diamond’ took to his x to add a series of tweets challenging both Conor McGregor and Islam Makhachev for a last rodeo.

It all started when Poirier added a series of tweets challenging Conor McGregor for a fight. He wrote, “Hey @TheNotoriousMMA it felt so nice, I did it twice ya bumskie.” It’s quite funny coming for Poirier at this point in time because he denied wanting to fight McGregor a fourth time when ‘Mystic Mac’ challenged him when he was preparing for his fight against Michael Chandler. It appears that the tables have turned.

Regardless, a fan asked Poirier what about his plans on fighting Makhachev again, ‘Diamond replied, “If arman can’t fight let’s go again.” The Louisiana native is hellbent on making his last fight a good one. Another fan asked Poirier whether he was doing this for money and Poirier explained that he only wanted blood, “I’m cool I don’t need the cash I just want the blood.”

His last tweet hinted at his upcoming retirement from the world of MMA. The former interim lightweight champ added that he would be retiring after his last dance, “The Last Dance. Let em know.”  The UFC supremo has already stated that Poirier would do whatever he wishes and seems like his time has come. It must be noted that he was planning a retirement before his fight against Makhcahev.

A legacy spanning almost two decades! This is the story of Dustin Poirier. With a record of 30 victories and 9 defeats, there’s hardly anyone in the world of MMA who has as strong a record as him. however, despite this strong record, Poirier has never won an undisputed UFC belt. The uncrowned prince of the division got the last chance to claim the gold at UFC 302 but Makhachev got him on a D’Arce Choke to defeat him.

While having a discussion with the media, Poirier explained why he wants to retire from MMA, “Family and my health. My body feels good, but I’ve been getting punched and kicked and kneed in the face for almost 18 years. I want to take care of my brain health. A lot of these guys are fighting for paydays. I don’t have to do that anymore. I’m fighting because I love fighting. But I can’t love something so much that it takes away from who I am or my family’s future.”
