The entire world of mixed martial arts has been waiting for Dustin Poirier to make a comeback ever since he lost his chance to become an undisputed lightweight champion, following the loss against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302. Of course, Poirier hinted at retirement following the bout and took up the role of an analyst with the UFC, but his return for one final bout still remains a hot topic in the MMA community. Well, the details of the Cajun fighter’s next fight are still under complete mystery. But ‘Diamond’ has now come forth with a one-word expression for his next bout.

The talk of the MMA town has put ‘Diamond’ up against Max Holloway. Of course, this was because back in October 2024, he sent forth a tweet reading, “I want Max or Topuria.” And to add to the speculations, Beneil Dariush told Submission Radio that even though he wasn’t completely sure about it, he was definitely hearing a lot about Holloway vs. Poirier 3. But that’s not the update that ‘Diamond’ talked about.

Following the events of UFC 314, a fan took to X and begged the former interim lightweight champion for some details about his upcoming fight. The tweet read, “@DustinPoirier  can we get the details for your next fight pleaseeeeeeeeeee.” Poirier happened to stumble upon the tweet. But he didn’t confirm a date or a name. Instead, he replied with just one word. “WAR.”

Dustin Poirier weighs in on his final MMA bout

Talking to talkSPORT back in February 2025, Poirier said, “My next fight will be my last fight. I’m going to put the gloves down and I’m just hoping I will be able to do that here in New Orleans, Louisiana. You know, where I picked them up. I started fighting in Louisiana, I would love to retire here in Louisiana in the summer. Me and the UFC have been talking about this, they’re trying to get the state of Louisiana on board, New Orleans on board and we’re pushing for the summer so I really hope it comes together man.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is a Poirier vs. Holloway 3 the perfect send-off for 'The Diamond' in his hometown?

Have an interesting take?

And maybe after that, we can hope to get to see Poirier compete in the squared rings. Well, that’s what the former interim lightweight champion wished for, too. After all, it was boxing that brought the Louisiana native to the world of mixed martial arts. And it was only natural for him to get back to the squared rings and follow the suit set by legends like Francis Ngannou, Mike Perry, and other MMA stars who boxed. But for now, we need to wait for some official confirmations regarding Holloway vs. Poirier 3.
