Widely acclaimed as one of the best Lightweight fighters in UFC, Dustin Poirier is still reeling from his loss to UFC BMF champ Justin Gaethje. At UFC 291, Gaethje defeated Poirier and evened the score for his defeat back in 2018. Poirier, who was quite confident of his win going into the match, was understandably disheartened by his loss.

According to Poirier, his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov wasn’t as hurtful because he knew that ‘The Eagle’ was better than him. However, he cannot seem to be able to come to terms with the loss he suffered at the hands of Justin Gaethje. In light of that, Poirier recently Tweeted, hinting at a possible weight change in the future.

Although Poirier might have been disheartened when he lost the BMF belt, he is not one to call it quits. After taking a couple of days to soak it all in, Poirier has Tweeted and this time, there might be some interesting news for the fans.

Initially, Poirier had said that moving up a weight class didn’t make sense and that he wouldn’t be doing it. That thinned down the list of his next opponents by a significant number. Naturally, there was one name that came to everyone’s mind as the next possible opponent for Dustin Poirier and the name was Nate Diaz.

Diaz and Poirier have a long history. The two were supposed to fight each other way back but the fight never materialized. But now seems as good a time as ever to make the fight happen. Also, Nate Diaz is the only other fighter who lost his BMF championship title, besides Dustin Poirier, making this potential fight card even more probable.

But Poirier’s recent Tweet saying, “Ok I’ll move up“, has given the fans a glimmer of hope that Poirier might actually be considering moving to the Welterweight division.

Fans Predict Welterweight opponents for Poirier

As soon as Poirier made the Tweet saying that he would be open to moving up a weight class in the UFC, fans wasted no time in suggesting the names of Welterweight UFC fighters that could be Poirier’s next match.

One fan said Welterweight champ Leon Edwards might be next.

While another fan suggested that Diaz’s former opponent Jake Paul might be next for Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier.

One fan of Poirier pointed out that Poirier gets better every time he moves up the weight ranks, suggesting Poirier’s move up to the Lightweight division from the Featherweight division.

However, most of the fans of the sport seemed to see eye-to-eye when it came to one name – UFC welterweight fighter Colby Covington.

Some were enthused about Poirier’s ‘potential’ fight against Covington.

One fan seemed to think that Covington would be too much of a challenge for Poirier.
