Chael Sonnen is back with yet another Khamzat Chimaev vs. Paulo Costa video. The ex-UFC fighter has previously forecasted bad weather for the upcoming bout at UFC 294. In an earlier video, Sonnen told his audience how he was worried about the match because both the fighters had previously had trouble making it to the Octagon.
On his YouTube channel, Sonnen has now uploaded yet another analysis video, and he’s still not convinced things will go well. It could be a massive shock to the audience if things go sideways before the fight. Lately, there has been a lot of messing around and beefing among the fighters. But will they get to fight? Here’s what Sonnen thinks.

Chael Sonnen is certain that he can tell the fate of the loser of the matchup. Whoever wins Chimaev vs. Costa might be the next up for a championship fight with Sean Strickland. That may be a quick decision. However, with stakes this high, the loser also faces a big risk. It’s an exciting high-risk high reward situation according to Sonnen.
“Whoever wins this fight, I believe, will be announced quickly,” started Sonnen. “. . . as the next in line for Strickland. Whoever doesn’t win, it’s going to be two and three years before that discussion even comes back.”
Sonnen makes a fair point. The fight is so exhilarating because of the high stakes and the reputation of the two fighters. Obviously, being in line to contest the champion himself is a big deal. But even one of the two fighters going back down a few ranks can be seen as tragic.
It’s mostly because both Costa and Chimaev are high-level fighters who also happen to be fan favorites. More importantly, going away from the title for more than a few years can be terrifying after losing such an important match. Sonnen also pointed out how the fight could end up being a five-round battle. Five-round fights while not entirely uncommon, can still take a toll on the fighters.

Sonnen seemed worried that the two fighters might have to struggle for the high risks and rewards. He wasn’t very happy with the idea of it being a five-round battle. If the fight actually goes on for the whole duration of five rounds, coming to a decision might be difficult with such high-profile fighters.
“I personally was worried that they would make it a five-round contest. I don’t like the five-round contest,” said Sonnen later in the video.

Clearly, a lot of pressure is riding on the Chimaev vs. Costa fight. The co-main event will be followed by Islam Makhachev going up against Charles Oliveira for a title defense. It’s easy to say that UFC 294 is going to be an adrenaline-filled pay-per-view. The question that remains is, who will come out of the cage a winner, and who will be forgotten by the UFC for a while after losing?
