Did Dana White just admit defeat over the Sphere debacle? What's your take on this mess?

Dana White isn’t much concerned about Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez fighting on Mexican Independence Day in Vegas. The UFC is putting on the first-ever combat sports card at the Sphere in Las Vegas, UFC 306, headlined by Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili on September 14. Mexican women’s flyweight champion, Alexa Grasso will face Valentina Shevchenko in a trilogy bout for the co-main event.

On being asked by a reporter at the UFC 304 post-fight press conference what he thought of the MGM Grand in Vegas putting on the Canelo fight, White felt that it was to be expected that perhaps the most popular Mexican fighter in the world had chosen to fight on that date.

“I didn’t know what they were gonna do to be honest with you. But its Mexican Independence Day, so you have to assume they were probably gonna be some Mexicans fighting other than our Mexicans that night. Like I said yesterday, it is what it is. Here we go we’ll see how it plays out,” White told reporters.

Canelo will take on Edgar Berlanga on Mexican Independence Day, to commemorate his homeland’s Independence Day. While White may not seem very concerned in the press conference, he did have a slightly different tone on a previous date, where he felt the date had been ‘stolen’ from him.

Canelo Alvarez takes on Dana White and Saudis on Mexican Independence Day

Dana White isn’t mad at ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and his manager, Al Haymon for putting on a fight on the same date as UFC 306. Expressing his respect and admiration for ‘Canelo’, White did feel that he had been robbed of the date by the duo. “Canelo’s one of those guys that I respect and, hey, good on [Al] Haymon. Haymon snatched the date right away from me,” White said in an interview before UFC 304.

Dana White has already confirmed that the inaugural Sphere card will probably be the UFC’s last there. The reason is simple: the immense amount of investment that has gone into making the card possible. The Sphere has never hosted a combat sports event, and apparently for good reason. To distribute the costs, the UFC has tied up with the Saudi government, who have been on a quest to make their country a combat sports hub.

Have an interesting take?

This means that Alvarez will not only take on White and the UFC but also HE Turki Alalasheik and the Saudi government, which is likely not going to go down well with them. With the immense amounts of investment that have gone into the Sphere card, it is no wonder the UFC boss is somewhat concerned about the event. What are your thoughts on ‘Canelo’ fighting on the same date as UFC 306?
