Let’s take a look at the history of UFC 196 and how it started an epic rivalry

Since it’s pretty obvious that the fight was loved by fans of different generations, one can always take a look at how it ended up shaping an epic rivalry that still gets talked about.

Surprisingly, the fight happened to take place at welterweight after former lightweight champ Rafael Dos Anjos pulled out. The Brazilian was meant to defend his belt against ‘The Notorious’ in what was an attempt by the Irishman to collect two UFC golds. After failed negotiations with other fighters, Nate Diaz was pulled in as a late replacement and the fight was announced for 175 pounds.

Despite heading in as an underdog into the fight, Diaz ended up submitting McGregor in the second round after surviving the Irishman’s early offense. This shocking win helped the American in making a massive name for himself among a larger audience. Ultimately, this loss also led to ‘The Notorious’ demand a rematch which he eventually won via decision at UFC 202.

Although both the fighters went on to earn massive success in their respective careers following the second bout, talks of a third fight are often rumored behind closed doors. Since Diaz is out of a contract with the UFC currently, fans can only hope that a third fight takes place at some point in the future.
