Last night, the long-standing rivalry between “Dagestan vs Ireland” came to a dramatic conclusion at PFL Champions Series 1 inside Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena. Bellator Lightweight Champion Usman Nurmagomedov successfully defended his title against Irish sensation Paul Hughes in a brutal five-round clash. Despite a point deduction, Usman managed to secure a majority decision victory, extending his unbeaten streak to 19 wins.

However, the true twist came post-fight, when Usman’s cousin, Khabib Nurmagomedov, grabbed the mic and made a surprising remark, reversing his earlier stance: “Brother, Ireland doesn’t have fighters. Let’s be honest. How many fighters do you know from Ireland?” This comment sparked a backlash from the MMA community, including a sharp response from Conor McGregor on X , calling it “sickening stuff” and criticizing those around ‘The Eagle’.

Despite the ongoing tension with Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov later took a more reconciliatory approach, directing a heartfelt message to Ireland, particularly praising their support for Palestine amidst the ongoing conflict with Israel. “I just want to say one thing. All these things began from my side and the other guy when we were fighting, but don’t forget, Ireland is the biggest supporter in the world for Palestine. Don’t forget about this. We love you guys, your government, everybody here inside the cage. MMA is all about respect. We love you guys because you support our brothers in Palestine. We love you guys.”

This isn’t the first time Khabib Nurmagomedov has expressed his admiration for Ireland’s support of Palestine. Just a week prior, he shared an Instagram story featuring a post from law professor and social media commentator Khaled Beydoun, who highlighted Ireland’s strong backing of Palestine in its ongoing conflict with Israel. However, he quickly removed the story.

Donald Trump promises Khabib Nurmagomedov to ‘Stop’ the war in Palestine

Ahead of the election last year, Donald Trump made headlines when UFC CEO Dana White invited him to UFC 302, following his conviction on 34 felony counts related to the 2021 Capitol Hill chaos. White saw the event as an opportunity to help Trump rebuild his image among fight fans in time for the upcoming election and his presidential campaign. The event, held on June 1, 2024, at the Prudential Center in New Jersey, featured the highly anticipated showdown between Islam Makhachev and Dustin Poirier as the main event.

However, what truly captured the attention of fans was Donald Trump’s unexpected shift in stance. Known for his pro-Israel policies during his presidency, Trump was seen having a conversation with Khabib Nurmagomedov ringside in a viral video. In the clip, ‘The Eagle’, shaking Trump’s hand, said, “I know you will stop the war in Palestine.” Trump responded, “We will stop it. I will stop the war.”

What’s your take on Khabib Nurmagomedov’s sudden shift in stance towards Ireland? Do you think he was compelled to praise Ireland, or is there more to it? Recently, the Dagestani star has faced growing criticism for a change in his attitude, especially considering his previously humble persona. Could the defeat of Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC 311 have played a role in altering the family’s approach? Share your thoughts below.
