It isn’t unnatural for a fighter to get political or make their foray into politics. Remember when Muhammad Ali was banned from boxing for three years because he refused into be drafted to the Vietnam War? Or even NFL star Herschel Walker who was the Republican candidate for US Senator between 2021 and 2022. Sports personalities entering politics is not a novel concept. It makes sense because of their star power and ability to influence the masses. The latest, and most high-profile entity in the modern era to enter politics is none other than Conor McGregor.

In late 2023, McGregor teased that he would run for President in Ireland, following the Dublin riots. Back then, it just seemed like just another one of the Irishman’s crazy claims. But today, ‘Mystic Mac’ found himself in the White House, propagating against the current Irish government, and fraternizing with the President of the United States.

‘The Notorious’ was invited by Donald Trump to the Oval Office for St Patrick’s Day, and their bromance was in full swing. The President, whose favorite fighter, by the way, is Khabib Nurmagomedov, told McGregor that he is Trump’s “favorite Irishman.” But the real cream of the crop came when the Irish superstar took the moment to highlight what he thought were failures on part of the current Irish government.

McGregor posted on X saying, “The days of weak men destroying countries is over! I have the complete backing and support of the entire Trump administration! They are the Government of ACTION! A beacon of light for the Western World! Let’s go Ireland.” ‘The Notorious’ also posted Trump’s Instagram photos with him on his story and wrote, “Men of the People.”

Naturally, ‘The Notorious’, who has been in the news for mostly the wrong reasons lately, garnered a lot of backlash (even before went to the Oval Office) for his association with the President of the United States. And while a lot of people think of this as a bizarre series of events, it could very well gather the momentum Conor McGregor needs to run for office in his home country.

But then again, ‘Mystic Mac’ is getting cozy with the President in his second term. But that wasn’t always the case. Remember when the Irishman absolutely ripped into the POTUS when he was serving as the 45th President of the United States? If you don’t remember, let’s jog your memory a bit.

“I don’t give a f*** about Donald Trump” – Conor McGregor in 2016

Yes, there was a time ‘The Notorious’ wasn’t the biggest fan of Donald Trump. That was when Trump just joined the Oval Office in 2016. We all know about the POTUS’s love for MMA. And unless you’ve been sleeping under a rock, you also know that Trump isn’t the biggest fan of former UFC and WWE star Ronda Rousey.

Back then Ronda Rousey was at the height of her MMA success, while Conor McGregor was trailing not too far behind. So when ‘Rowdy’ ended up at the wrong end of the head-kick KO by Holly Holm at UFC 193, the then-45th President of the United States expressed happiness at the moment, putting out a tweet (now X post) stating that she wasn’t “a nice person”, particularly because she didn’t touch gloves with Holm before they fought.

The Irishman, who seemed to be on great terms with the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion, didn’t take kindly to President Trump’s jibe at her and said the following when he was asked about the same by the outlet X17, “It’s easy for someone that’s not been in there to comment, but it’s different when you’re in there. The emotions are high. So, it is what it is. You either want to touch gloves or don’t. That means nothing. So Donald can shut his big fat mouth, I don’t give a f**k about Donald Trump.”

Oh, how the times have changed. The Irishman, once a working-class hero, a fighter’s fighter—now a big businessman with political ties and in the news for all the wrong reasons. From zero to hero to Nero. Things haven’t come full circle. They’ve evolved beyond a point of no return.
