Donald Trump loves the UFC and for good reason. UFC CEO Dana White is one of Trump’s best friends and an outspoken supporter of the former President. Fighters like Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal wear their support for the former reality TV star on their sleeve, to the point that Covington often wears ‘Make America Great Again’ hats to public appearances and Masvidal campaigns for Trump in his native Miami and other parts of Florida.
Even with the Presidential Primaries around the corner, and the debate season in full swing, Trump found time in his busy schedule to attend UFC 295 at the MSG in New York City last month, where he was met with applause and appreciation by the crowd. Ahead of ‘Chaos’ UFC 296 title bout, let us take a look at what the former President said when he was asked to pick between Masvidal and Covington.

Earlier this year, former US President Donald Trump joined comedian Jim Norton and former UFC champion Matt Serra on the ‘UFC Unfiltered’ show on YouTube. Trump spoke highly of former UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal and credited him for galvanizing political support for him in Florida. Masvidal is the son of Cuban immigrants who escaped the island country to escape its restrictive economic and political regime at the time.
‘Gamebred’ is an ardent opponent of the policies of countries like Cuba and Venezuela and feels Trump aligns with his political sensibilities the best. However, the former President was dismayed at Masvidal and Colby Covington’s violent clash, which led to Masvidal being charged with multiple felonies.
Masvidal has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery charges for reportedly sucker punching ‘Chaos’ outside a steakhouse in 2022. The felony charges against him have been dropped. Trump was, however, excited about Covington’s upcoming fight against Leon Edwards for the welterweight title.
“They had a fight with Colby, who I really like too, you know Colby, those two don’t like each other too,” Trump said on UFC Unfiltered. “Colby is a MAGA guy, he walks into the ring sometimes wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat and he’s got a great fight coming up [with Leon Edwards]…” Trump told Norton and Serra.

Trump was also very uncomfortable at the prospect of having to choose between Covington and Masvidal. Although based solely upon how he talks about them, he seems to be more partial towards Masvidal (who helped him win Florida and the Presidency), the Republican Presidential contender stayed away from picking one over the other.

“I don’t love it [being asked to choose between Covington and Masvidal], I hate to give that kind of an answer too. I don’t like to do that. I know a lot of the fighters, I’ve held a lot of fights for my own reasons I mean it brings people, it brings success, it brings money, it brings a lot of good things and it’s an interesting business,” he added.

As he gears up to run for President once again, Donald Trump would be counting on all the support he could muster. And a retired Masvidal could dedicate himself full-time to campaigning for Trump. In which case, the possibility of Masvidal being appointed to a government position if Trump wins might even be a very real possibility.
