Being knocked out for the first time has the tendency to change a person. Not to mention, it takes the sheen of invincibility from a person. Mike Tyson‘s shocking loss to Buster Douglas saw him go downhill pretty quickly.

Similarly, Anderson Silva was KO’d by Chris Weidman at UFC 162, which saw him go on perhaps the worst losing streak in UFC history, managing to win only one out of his next eight fights. This came after ‘The Spider’ put together the longest title reign in UFC history. And one of the greatest examples of fighters not being the same after a knockout is former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. But, surprisingly, one other person was far more affected by his knockout.

Kamaru Usman has a daughter, Samirah Usman, with former long-term partner Eleslie Dietzsch. She is nine years old and was born in 2014, before Kamaru joined the UFC. Samirah has an Instagram account with 17k followers currently, and it is monitored by her parents.

She also has a YouTube account on which she can be seen spending quality time with her father. Samirah was present at Kamaru’s second fight against Leon Edwards at UFC 278, which resulted in a shocking head-kick knockout of ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’. This apparently traumatized the nine-year-old, who was seen being consoled following her father’s brutal knockout. She was carried out immediately from the venue as Kamaru was being treated.

“Immediately after it happened, I didn’t necessarily see her; she went back to my house in Utah and passed out, because it was late… I came over, she slept – she was in my bed. We woke up, and I just had a conversation with her,” Usman later said.

Thankfully, she seemed to be back in good spirits the next day and asked to play with her dad, seeming to be unaffected by his knockout, according to the former welterweight champion. Usman added that he was thankful for her, as his daughter kept her grounded.

And to neutralize any chance of her going through something like this again, Kamaru did not let her attend the third encounter between him and Edwards at UFC 286. Before the bout, he spoke about why his daughter would not be present at the fight.

Unfortunately, she’s [his daughter] won’t make the trip… She could just turn off [the] Nigerian Nightmare back to Kamaru Usman. She just flips it. So I wanna let this one be a business trip, take care of business and take that belt back home to her,” the Nigerian said.

This seemed to have been a good idea. While Usman did not get knocked out, he did lose the bout on the judges’ scorecard, sparing his daughter further heartbreak. And as he prepares to move up a weight class and face Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294 on short notice, with the winner promised a middleweight title shot at champion Sean Strickland next, Samirah will be praying for her father to win.
