Conor McGregor is the biggest star in MMA history to date. Along with his exceptional mic skills, trash-talk, and knack for creating hype for his fights that seem almost innate, his elite-level striking and fighting prowess have been honed with practice and repetition. And the place where he was able to hone his craft was the Straight Blast Gym in Dublin, Ireland. Now, another potential UFC champion could be in the making at McGregor’s gym.

Headed by coach John Kavanagh SBG is home to several MMA stars including UFC light heavyweight Brazilian-Irish star Johnny Walker. Walker and McGregor are teammates at the SBG gym. And while the two do not train together, the two do share an amicable relationship, as evidenced by the Dubliner defending Walker from criticism earlier this year.

In May this year, Johnny Walker fought Anthony Smith in a light heavyweight bout on the UFC Fight Night: Rozenstruik vs. Almeida card. Walker emerged victorious after the sanctioned three rounds via a unanimous decision. However, the bout underwhelmed some fans. One fan took to Twitter and posted a clip of the fight lamenting the state of the LHW division.

Walker’s stablemate Conor McGregor, however, disagreed and tweeted in defence the fellow SBG  gym teammate. He expressed disagreement with the fan’s assessment and pointed out that Smith made the right decision to ankle pick Walker, since the latter had pinned his head. He ended his message by congratulating Walker and their coach, John Kavanagh.

McGregor wrote, “Disagree. That’s real nice tracking and pinning of the head here by Walker, and coincidentally, nice decision making by Smith to go down to the ankle pick attempt as if he hadn’t he’d have been stopped cold here if he stays on the feet. Good all round imo. Congrats Paradigms Johnny Walker and Coach Kav! SBG clean sweep this week. Another one!”

SBG head coach Kavanagh gave an interview to Ariel Helwani in January this year. He heaped praises on the light heavyweight and said that he saw a championship in the near future for Walker. Kavanagh observed that Walker was a naturally gifted athlete, but had lacked certain fundamentals in his game when he joined SBG. But, after working those kinks out, he felt Walker was virtually unstoppable.

“He’s a very unusual human, but there was some lacking of fundamentals in fighting. Let’s say, that he could sometimes get away with things that normal humans couldn’t… I really feel that we’ve tightened up a lot of things there. For sure, I feel there’s a world championship in his future. Just glad to play a small part in that,” he told the journalist.

Walker will face Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 294 on October 21 in the UAE. And the bout may see the winner fight for the light heavyweight title pretty soon, making Kavanagh’s prophecy come true after all. After the upcoming Alex Pereira vs. Jiri Prochazka bout for the vacant title at UFC 295, the winner at UFC 294 could very well be the next title contender. Who do you think will win in the bout between Walker and Ankalaev at UFC 294? Let us know in the comments section below.
