In the realm of combat sports, rankings are crucial for multiple reasons. It provides a sense of hierarchy in a weight division between fighters. Subsequently, it becomes a process of providing title shots to those worth in a systematic manner. Needless to say, the UFC rankings, although not gospel truth, are paramount. After UFC 297, the rankings have altered, especially in the middleweight division.

Before UFC 297, the middleweight champion, Dricus Du Plessis was ranked below Israel Adesanya. However, now he is towering over him. What caused this massive shift? How was it determined? Let’s unwrap these questions.

Last weekend, the middleweight belt was on the line. Former Champion, Sean Strickland fought against the South African, however, he was defeated. Now, Du Plessis is the champion and every other contender will be eyeing for a fight against him to get a shot at the title. By extension, the champion would tower over everyone else in the rankings, including the number 1 ranked fighter.

Moreover, he is also now above the rankings of former champion Israel Adesanya by his having the belt. Intriguingly, the two were supposed to fight against one another last year when Adesanya was the champion but the tables are now turned. As per the new UFC rankings, Israel Adesanya ceases to be ranked number one as Sean Strickland replaces him. So, he is abated to number 2, whereas, the champion is above both of them.

Israel Adesanya to face Dricus Du Plessis?

The sport of MMA is unpredictable. However, for the most part, rankings are usually a map to navigate future match-ups. Strickland is number 1 in the division but it is unlikely he will get a title shot next as he just had a fight with the champion. Not to mention, even Dana White, the president of the UFC does not foresee it taking place. In the post-fight press conference, he stated, “Not thinking about a rematch right away.”

Hence, the likelihood of Adesanya facing Du Plessis increases. In any case, they were supposed to fight, however, the champion had to pull out because of his injury.
