Islam Makhachev beat Alexander Volkanovski, all thanks to a spectacular head kick. The UFC 294 main event was one of the most awaited fights as lightweight champion Islam Makhachev faced featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski in a super fight. Their first fight was a close affair, which Makhachev won via a unanimous decision. However, the rematch turned out to be a one-sided affair, as Makhachev got Volkanovski in the first round itself, throwing cold water on the Aussie’s double-champ aspirations.

This was the first UFC loss for ‘Volk’. The knockout was also the first of Makhachev’s UFC career and earned him a Performance of the Night bonus. With many feathers ruffled, ‘Big’ John McCarthy and Josh Thompson took to their podcast, Weighing In, to discuss some surprising advice Daniel Cormier had for his friend Makhachev. And of course, it involves UFC’s very own, the ‘Notorious’ Conor McGregor.

John McCarthy and his co-host Josh Thompson discussed Daniel Cormier advising Makhachev to fight Conor McGregor next. “Daniel Cormier was talking about Islam Makhachev and saying that the person that he should fight next is McGregor,” the MMA referee said. This suggestion, however, did not go down well with Thompson.

“I mean he’s he’s doing what he’s doing what friends should do… But, yeah, I mean I don’t know what to say. I don’t think it’d be a good fight. I think it’d be fun but I don’t think Conor’s taking that fight. I think Conor’s gonna have to follow through with the uh Michael Chandler fight. I think there’s too much stuff, too much money has been spent on promoting that fight,” Thomson remarked.

While the former UFC fighter did acknowledge that this was good advice as a McGregor fight would earn Makhachev a lot of money and boost his popularity, he was not sold on the competitiveness. Plus, he felt the Irishman would not accept the fight and added that the UFC had spent a lot of money promoting his comeback bout against Michael Chandler. So what’s next for Makhachev?
