Food is, without a doubt, one of the most important commodities in the world. Recently, Joe Rogan had Will Harris, owner of White Oak Pastures, and his daughter Jenni Harris on the ‘Joe Rogan Experience’ as guests. They made some startling revelations about the American food industry that led Rogan to make a bold claim about the American masses.

Will and Jenni Harris told Joe Rogan about the centralization of the meat industry, especially beef. Jenni mentioned that there are about four meat processors that control the beef supply in the US. In addition to that, Will further mentioned that the US imported almost 956 million pounds of beef until now, in 2023. This led Joe Rogan to give his opinion about this situation. Let’s see what he has to say.

The amount of beef that the US imported in 2023 astounded the JRE host. Joe Rogan believes that he may not be alone. Other people would have the same reaction as him. Rogan said, “I bet most people listening to this are blown away by that number.” He further mentioned that an average person may not even think about the US importing meat from other countries.

“If you asked the average person on the street, ‘How much meat do you think is imported from other countries?’ They’d say probably none. They wouldn’t even think of it,” said Joe Rogan. He also stated that the tactics used by the American companies aren’t to his liking since they label the products as their own. The 56-year-old added, “Especially if you get to label it a product of the USA, which is so dirty.” Additionally, Jenni Harris also mentioned that people don’t really have a choice in choosing which company’s product they want to buy.

Consumers do not have a choice

There are several companies that produce and sell the same kind of products. However, Jenni Harris claims that consumers only have the impression of choice because most products are the same. She said, “They [consumers] have the impression of choice. They don’t actually have choice.”

She then shared a list of brands that were owned by a few parent companies, implying that only a handful of companies control the production of food products. This creates an impression of choice. However, that is not the case. Incidentally, the pattern is the same in the meat industry as well. “Look at all these brands that are owned by ten or so parent companies… The same is true with meat,” Jenni Harris added.

It is startling to see that there are only a few big companies that control the production and supply of food products. Similarly, the amount of imports done by the US is also huge nonetheless. These kinds of revelations make the ‘Joe Rogan Experience’ a must-watch for viewers. It remains to be seen what more information comes to light in the future episodes of the million-dollar podcast.
