Dana White is again in the limelight for sparking controversy when he said that Jon Jones is the best P4P fighter in the world, even when Islam Makhachev saved his lightweight throne in UFC 302. White ignited a debate among fans regarding this, and now more fuel is in the fire because White compared Alexander Volkanovski to Ciryl Gane. While explaining his reasoning behind naming ‘Bones’ as the best P4P fighter on the planet, he brought out the rankings and how Volk was the first champion, but then, Jones moved up.

White explained this in a ‘Flagrant’ podcast with Andrew Schulz. The UFC head honcho said, “Volkanovski moved up and it was a very f**ing close fight the first time. Jon Jones moved up and f**ing decimated the greatest heavyweight that was out there [Ciryl Gane]. If he doesn’t go for that f**ing armbar, he beats Francis Ngannou and becomes the heavyweight champion. Jon Jones walked through him like it was f**ing nothing.”

This was even highlighted by Championship Rounds on Twitter and made fans agitated. Fans were not only angry about the remark he made about Makhachev but now they seem to be irked by the comparison between ‘The Great’ and ‘Bon Gamin’. Gane has a record of 12-2-0, whereas Volk has a record of 26-4-0.  Jones defeated Gane in UFC 285 and took the throne. On the other hand, Volk fought Makahchev at UFC 284 and again on short notice at UFC 294.

Both times Makhachev won and fans considered this second loss the turning point for Volk’s career. Dana White seems to favor Jones since he has never lost a fight and has fought all the champions in heavyweight. However, many did not like the comparison between Gane and Volk.

Fans dismiss the comparison that Dana White made between Ciryl Gane and Alexander Volkanovski

The fans were angry, especially because there was a huge gap in their skills and accomplishments. One fan pointed out, “Did he just compare Ciryl Gane to Volkanovski?” while another said, “Ah yes, Islam had a close fight 3 fights ago against the P4P number one. I guess we’ll ignore the fact that Jon fought Dominick Reyes 2 fights ago.”

Volk was considered P4P’s best fighter a few fights ago and lost to Makahchev twice. But when Jones moved from light heavyweight to heavyweight, he defeated Gane. The CEO said all this to highlight how good Jones is and pointed out that Gane would have won against Francis Ngannou if not for his armbar move.  On this note, another user pointed out, “Crazy to think that just a few years ago, Dana was praising Ngannou for being the “worst” man on the planet. he has blocked Ngannou out completely.”

On record, this looks fine between Gane and Volk but in reality, there is a huge difference between their accomplishments, and comparing them was blasphemous to the fans. One netizen was shocked and wrote, “Did Dana white just compare Volk to Cyril Gane?” while another said, “To call Ciryl one of the greatest heavyweights is wild. I liked him but he just wasn’t it.”  One fan noted that Volk was better and commented, “If Ciryl was as talented as Volk okay. I get it. But cmon man”; another follower wrote, “Sorry but Ciryl Gane was not the best HW out there. Pav or Tommy would light Gane up just as easy.”

Dana White continues to praise Jones and it seems he will not stop anytime soon. What do you think about his verdict? Share your thoughts in the comments.
