Most UFC fighters may prefer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to enhance their ground game. But, combat sambo has also proven to be one of the best martial arts for the cause. However, most fans may agree that the representatives of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the UFC lag far behind their combat sambo counterparts. Although there are worthy representatives of BJJ in the UFC, their ground game has come up short against the combat sambo of Khabib Nurmagomedov or Islam Makhachev.

This lag often turns out to be humiliating for other BJJ practitioners. In a video on the web, the noted, Islam Makhachev, talked about one of the things that need to be done in order to represent BJJ better at the UFC’s stage of the UFC. Well, the famed BJJ icon, Gordon Ryan, couldn’t have agreed more with Makhachev. He shared the video on his Instagram story with a confirmation of Makhachev’s words. So let’s dive in at what he has to say!

The video that Ryan put as his Instagram story showcased the current UFC lightweight champ in a conversation with former UFC champ-champ, Daniel Cormier. They talked about former UFC interim lightweight champ, Dustin Poirier’s prowess in BJJ in the initial part of the video. ‘DC’ revealed from his knowledge, Dustin Poirier is a black belt. He is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. Bro.”

But Makhachev couldn’t really digest that ‘The Diamond’ also held a BJJ black belt to his name. Looking at the fact that Poirier hardly uses any jiu-jitsu in the octagon, Makhachev asked, Black-belt? Who give him that? We have to check that moment.” Poirier has been through a number of troublesome moments inside the octagon when he was taken down to the ground.

Khabib Nurmagomedov dominated him on the ground at UFC 242. He also got submitted by former UFC lightweight champ, Charles Oliveira at UFC 269, which caused a lot of fans to doubt his prowess in BJJ. However, there are a lot of others who belong to the same category of fighters as Poirier.

Makhachev also had a few more words for all such fighters who allegedly held black belts in BJJ without any real skill. He said, “We have to cancel many black belts” since they made BJJ “look bad”. Gordon Ryan expressed his agreement with Makhachev’s words captioning his story, “@islam_makhachev is right”. A lot of fans may view this as Ryan’s approval of Sambo being better than BJJ.

But in all reality, Sambo in the UFC looks better than BJJ because it is represented way better by fighters like Khabib and Islam than their BJJ counterparts. However, shortly after the release of Makhachev’s ballistic take on Poirier, ‘The Diamond’ proved that The Dagestani shouldn’t have included him in his list of UFC fighters with BJJ black belts without any real skill.

A first-round head kick-KO defeat in the last fight of ‘The Diamond’ at UFC 291 may have left him and his fans devastated. But, the Louisiana native showcased his prowess on the ground in his UFC 281 fight against Michael Chandler. After defending himself from Chandler’s submission moves throughout the second round, Poirier smelled blood when he managed to mount Chandler’s back in the third stanza.

He didn’t waste much time to get ‘Iron’ in a tight rear naked choke, eventually forcing the tap from him. In his post-fight interview with the noted Joe Rogan, Poirier also gave out the now-famous UFC world catchphrase, “Who ain’t got Jiu-Jitsu?”

But a lot of UFC fans may want to see more of such stuff from Poirier and other alleged black-belt holders without any BJJ skill. This won’t leave much scope for Islam Makhachevs or Gordon Ryans to question the class of BJJ black belts in the UFC. But for now, would you say that Makhachev and Ryan are correct in thinking whatever they think?
