Derek Brunson very recently created history by quickly dominating a formidable opponent in his very first PFL match. The fighter had split his ways with the UFC just to step inside the PFL cage. His wrestling was top-tier and so was his form. However, it was his physique that bothered some spectators.

Brunson looked magnificent as he stepped into the cage after weighing in. Rumors sparked about his training regiment and some just couldn’t believe it. And before anyone knew it, negative ideas about his massive self spread like wildfires. Now, he has finally addressed the allegations.

Brunson is a veteran of the UFC who parted ways with the organization in October 2023. Until then, he’d spent years fighting for the promotion. The fighter has been a professional for years now. And so, he couldn’t stop but address how inaccurate he felt the rumors were.

“PFL vs. UFC physique. I saw the debates online Steroid / PEDs or natural. Answer : never took any steroids or peds ever . Attention to details , no sodas , no chips , no candy , 10-15 miles of running for 10-12 weeks . The motivation was different !” he wrote in an X post.

In the same post, Brunson had posted a collage of himself in the PFL and in the UFC. There were interesting differences between the two pictures. This would include just his sheer size as well as the background and the lighting.

A fan pointed out how different lighting and presentation can make such a great difference in the pictures taken. Brunson would later respond to the comment by asking them to not reveal “all of the secrets” of the trade. Was fans’ judgment just a bit off this time around?

How did Brunson win?

The landslide victory came off a lot of grappling. He managed to dominate and stay on top of Ray Cooper III through the rounds. This gave him an upper hand and resulted in a unanimous decision victory. Now, Brunson has another opponent in his mind and it’s a little bit of a surprise.

“I came here to ball, where the hell is Jake Paul? I came here for the big fights. Next time we’re going to look for the finish.” He said in his post-fight interview. There had been attempts to make a boxing match possible between the two after Paul fought Nate Diaz. However, under the UFC, that could not happen. Now both the fighters are under the same banner. Will we see Brunson in the squared circle the next time around?
