Colby Covington isn’t one to mince his words. He loves to engage in verbal battles with his Octagon rivals and makes sure he hurts them in the right place. Being an outspoken enemy of the American Top Team, ‘Chaos’ leaves no chance to call their fighters out. After defeating bitter rival Jorge Masvidal in an enthralling main event fight at UFC 272, he is aiming at Dustin Poirier next.
However, it doesn’t end there itself, as ‘Chaos’ is known for his trash-talking. When he talks trash, he can bring in anyone to attack his rivals. Recently in an interview, Covington took a sly dig at ‘The Diamond’ involving none other than Nate Diaz.

‘Chaos’ said, “And you know… why is he [Dustin Poirier] trying to pick on a guy in the corner that has a lisp, that’s mentally handicapped and crippled. Nate Diaz is crippled, mentally and physically. That guy shouldn’t even be fighting anymore.”

“So if Dustin [Poirier] wants to pick on a crippled dude that has a lisp, Nate Diaz… why don’t you come fight the man? I’m the number one guy in the division.”
Colby Covington vs Dustin Poirier could see the light of day very soon
It’s not official yet, but knowing the UFC, it isn’t difficult to imagine an actual face-off between the two in the Octagon. As Covington has been targeting former ‘The Diamond’ for a long time and there is a legitimate beef, the UFC will look to cash in and look to give fighters and fans exactly what they want.
Given that Poirier wants to move to welterweight, it makes things even easier.
American Top Team coach Mike Brown claimed that Dustin Poirier can become a better welterweight than a lightweight. He said, “He’s plenty big for welterweight. Plenty big, 155 [pounds] is getting real difficult to make. I’m not certain. He could be a better welterweight than a lightweight. Time will tell, but he’s definitely not small for a welterweight.”

It looks like the perfect matchup for both the fighters, since they both stand far from a title shot in their respective divisions soon. ‘Chaos’ has already suffered back-to-back title fight defeats to Kamaru Usman. Hence, despite being the number one ranked fighter in the division, another title shot looks unlikely in the near future.
Whereas Poirier, who had a good start to 2021 as he defeated Conor McGregor twice in six months, couldn’t dethrone Charles Oliveira at UFC 269. With ‘Do Bronx’ defending his belt against Justin Gaethje next, it only makes sense for ‘The Diamond’ to take on ‘Chaos’.
