Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski will battle it out for the throne for the pound-for-pound best fighter on the planet this weekend at UFC 284. The lightweight and featherweight champions of the UFC will meet in the octagon in Perth, Australia to determine who is the top dog. The rare champion vs. champion fight is already on the way to beating some coveted PPV records, according to UFC president Dana White.
Recently, the head honcho of the world’s leading MMA promotion came under fire for not giving due promotion to a fight of such magnitude. However, White cleared all doubts and revealed that UFC 284 will surpass records set by the PPV king of the UFC, Conor McGregor.
White was recently speaking at the UFC Vegas 68 post-fight press conference. While answering questions about UFC 284, he gave insights into the projected numbers for the event.

Dana White claims UFC 284 set to break Conor McGregor’s record
Speaking about the significance of the top two pound-for-pound fighters facing each other, White said, “It’s a monster fight and just the gate alone out there is gonna be a [Madison Square Garden]-type gate.”
He continued, “And the pre-buys for pay-per-view are … if I had my phone I’d walk you through every one of the things. It’s beating all the fights of its type and it’s probably going to beat the record for pay-per-view in Australia and New Zealand.”
On an even more impressive note, he added, “The UFC, our record, which was Conor and somebody. But it looks like it’s going to break that record. It’s a monster fight.”
White’s statements should be reassuring for the fans and fighters. Especially after the lightweight champion himself complained about the lack of promotion for his first title defense.
Islam Makhachev dissatisfied with UFC 284 promotion
Islam Makhachev had more than a few things to say about UFC 284 promotions. The Dagestani did not feel the fight between the two champions was getting the attention it deserved. He vented his frustrations while talking to the Russian media.
The 31-year-old said, “I see that it’s not such a big promotion. Dana White himself has some problems; He does not pay much attention to this fight… In terms of Pay-per-view, yes, more could have been done. I only saw Volkanovski once in Sydney. A tour could have been organized around the world, a conference could be held in America.”
