Is Alex Pereira biting off more than he can chew by calling out Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall?

Alex Pereira has already entered the conversations when it comes to talking about the all-time greats in the history of Mixed Martial Arts. And to achieve this within just three years of a career filled with elite-level competitors is truly superhuman. But that is exactly what makes Pereira ‘The Poatan.’ Since, with his stone hands, he managed to defeat Jiri Prochazka to win his ninth fight in the promotion. And to no one’s surprise, five of those bouts were title fights with seven of them being against champions or former champions of the Dana White-led promotion.

But despite the elite-level competition, Poatan has managed to earn 8 wins with just one loss in the UFC. All thanks to his powerful striking that is helping him clean up any division he goes to. This power is also the reason why fans want him to earn a new championship belt in a very new division – Heavyweight. This is a move that Dana White did not want him to take, but an insider has provided Poatan with the clean chit to make the move anyway.

On his YouTube channel, Kevin Iole has claimed that a move to Heavyweight would be a good one for Pereira. This goes against what Dana White believed, as he thinks Pereira should stay at Light-Heavyweight instead. “It’s a whole other level going up to heavyweight. Even as big as Jon Jones is, as good as Jon Jones is, when Jon Jones was moving up to heavyweight, we’re like, ‘This is going to be interesting.”
But despite his claims, Iole has the belief that Pereira is a huge guy and surely has the capabilities to be a good heavyweight fighter.

He said, “Poatan is a big guy. Pereira is 6’4; he’s got an 80-inch reach. And he walks around between fights at 235-240. That’s around what heavyweight champion Jon Jones will come into the fight at. At about 245. Jones is, you know, a 245-250 pounder. A lot of the guys though are cutting weight in the heavyweight division to get to 265 in the UFC. So you know he will be giving up weight, but he’s going to have that speed advantage, and he has that great striking. I think he could handle himself at heavyweight very well. Does he beat Jon Jones? Does he beat Tom Aspinall? That’s another story.”

Pereira too would want to claim the Heavyweight belt sometime in the near future. Fans of the fighter too cannot wait for him to earn his third belt and face monsters of the Octagon such as Tom Aspinall and Jon Jones. This move will surely cement his name as one of the MMA GOATs. But before that, it seems like he wants another run at Middleweight.

Alex Pereira, the light heavyweight champion, posted on social media Tuesday that he is planning to return to the middleweight division following his upcoming UFC 307 title defense against Khalil Rountree Jr., win or lose. He wrote, “I’m focused on my next fight, and I’m going prepared, but you never know what can happen,” Pereira wrote on social media Monday night. “So regardless of the result, I want to go down one more time to the middleweight and go for the belt. Hey Dricus, bring your will to fight me so you can prove that you are better than me, with your public statement it is easy to make this happen. Chama.”

Have an interesting take?

Pereira posted the photo minutes after Du Plessis defended his title against Israel Adesanya a few weeks ago. And it seems like Du Plessis too wants to fight Poatan and is welcoming his move to the weight class. However, the current UFC Middleweight champion wants Poatan to go against his very friend Sean Strickland before he can get a chance at the Middleweight title. In a Twitter post, he wrote, “@AlexPereiraUFC you and you boyfriend @SStricklandMMA can have a domestic dispute on who gets slept first💤😴.” Well, it surely looks like Poatan is surely making things more interesting for his fans. But what do you think? Should he move to Heavyweight or look forward to returning to Middleweight? Let us know in the comments.
