“Nah, I wanna fight Jon Jones or Stipe. Let’s not discredit Stipe. I think a lot of people are looking past him, probably maybe sometimes me, to be honest. But whoever wins that one, I’m fighting next.” said Aspinall when asked about his intention to wait. The interim heavyweight champion further explained that the UFC Supremo Dana White should have a heavyweight tournament with two fights on the same night rather than waiting a year to decide the fate of the division.

“This is a thought I was thinking about all day: what about they be saying that Stipe and Jon Jones are fighting at MSG in November? Why don’t we do a tournament—Jones, Stipe, me, Alex? Four-man tournament, two fights in one night, and let’s find out the real heavyweight champion of the world. We’ve got the best heavyweight of all time, the best MMA fighter of all time, the light heavyweight champion, and then we’ve got me.” said Tom Aspinall. Well, it is not expected from Dana White to do what Aspinall has proposed but what will be next for the heavyweight division? Let us find out.

The fate of the heavyweight division

There was a time when the heavyweight division was considered one of the most active divisions, but this changed within a few years when the stars retired, and Jon Jones stepped up to fill their shoes. The former light heavyweight champion defeated Ciryl Gane to clinch the heavyweight champion of the world but since then Jones has held onto it. Jones was supposed to defend his title at the UFC 295 but a sudden pectoral injury forced him out of action for a good year.

Since then, the entire heavyweight division has been in the doldrums. However, things might be in for a change. Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic are finally going to face each other at the MSG in November and the winner will be facing Tom Aspinall to reunite both the titles. If we were to speak about a timeline, then it’s highly possible that we can witness a new champion within a year.

In addition to Aspinall, Miocic, and Jones, there’s another contender planning to go for the heavyweight title directly, and his name is Alex Pereira. The light heavyweight champion has been willing to jump a division to become a three-weight champion. Regardless, the heavyweight division is in for the month of activities.
