The paydays for UFC 291 were released only for a few fighters. Firstly, from the prelims card, C.J. Vergara, who defeated Vinicius Salvador, bagged $60,000 – $30,000 for showing up and $30,000 for winning the fight. Then we have Gabriel Bonfim, who earned a submission win over Trevin Giles, earning $24,000 – $12,000 for showing up and $12,000 for winning the fight.

Moving to the main card, we have the list topper Kevin Holland. He defeated Michael Chiesa on the latter’s return to the Octagon after a year and a half on the shelf. ‘Trailblazer’ won a reported $356,000 out of which $178,000 was for showing up to fight and another $178,000 for his win. Moreover, Bobby Green found himself among the top earners, too. He handed veteran Tony Ferguson his sixth straight loss. Consequently, he got paid $300,000 for his performance, with $150,000 for showing up and $150,000 for winning the fight. However, there is a reason why we don’t know about the purses of all the fighters. The records for the fighter purses have now become confidential.

UFC 291 athletes entered into confidentiality agreements

Earlier, the records for fighters’ purses were available to the public to interpret. However, a change came before UFC 291. Utah has joined the ranks of states that no longer disclose fighter pay information. In a statement, the Pete Suazo Utah Athletic Commission highlighted that such information is a “trade secret.”

It is believed that the release of such information would damage an athlete’s leverage in negotiating compensation for future competitions; potentially putting them at a disadvantage against those athletes who chose not to share their earnings data. Because of the confidential agreements, only the four aforementioned fighters sacrificed the fight purse details.
