Is Jon Jones dodging a real challenge by avoiding Tom Aspinall for a fight with Pereira?

As UFC 309 fades into the rearview mirror, the MMA world is eagerly awaiting what fans have been hoping for from UFC boss Dana White: a generational heavyweight clash. The biggest fight in the heavyweight division can reportedly be in the works, with Jon Jones, the division leader, set to face Tom Aspinall in a title unification bout. Dana White recently claimed, “If (Jones) doesn’t decide to retire, he will absolutely, positively fight Tom Aspinall,” dismissing any possibility of a Jones fight against Alex Pereira, stating, “There’s no f–king way.”

However, ‘Bones’ has stuck to his earlier claim, saying he will only fight Alex Pereira, or else he will retire, adding, “I will just move on with life,” and requesting “one more super fight.” This has left the situation hanging in the air, leaving fans puzzled about the ongoing drama. Amidst this uncertainty, Demetrious Johnson, a respected figure in MMA, weighed in on the matter with a reality check for Jon Jones, offering insight into what could be at stake if Jones chooses not to face Tom Aspinall.

While speaking to The MMA Guru on his YouTube podcast, Demetrious Johnson drew parallels between Jon Jones and former light heavyweight champion Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, who has been part of the UFC for over two decades and built a legendary career. ‘Mighty Mouse’ emphasized how Shogun gave ‘Bones’ the opportunity to make a name for himself. For the unversed, it was the Brazilian whom Jones beat to become the youngest UFC champion at the age of 23.

Johnson likened the current situation to what Jones faces today, comparing the levels of both Rua and Jones to that of Tom Aspinall. “When Jon Jones stepped in on short notice, he didn’t have to risk it; he didn’t need Shogun in his legacy,” Johnson explained. “But Mauricio Shogun gave Jon Jones that opportunity to make a name for himself, and Jon Jones capitalized on it.

‘Mighty Mouse’ believes Jones now faces two options: one, to face Tom Aspinall, or two, follow the path Khabib Nurmagomedov chose—retiring as soon as possible and leaving an unblemished record. “Now, I feel like it’s the vicious cycle of mixed martial arts or any sport,” Johnson said.

“If Khabib had stayed around long enough, somebody would have come in and beaten him and made a name off of beating him. Same thing with Jon Jones—it’s almost that time. If Jon Jones is going to stick around even longer, you’ve got to give the guy the next shot.” Following up, Johnson also weighed in on a potential clash between Jones and Aspinall.

DJ on the potential outcome of Jones vs. Tom Aspinall

Since last year, with a vicious knockout over Sergei Pavlovich in under one round, Tom Aspinall has made his voice heard in the quest for the heavyweight title. However, to truly mark his status, he must pass the most vicious test of all: facing division leader Jon Jones. The undisputed king, who isn’t keen on risking his legacy against a “dangerous” and younger fighter like Aspinall, has made it clear he prefers facing opponents around his age, such as Alex Pereira.

But after Dana White’s pressure, Jones has seemingly given some thought to the fight—on the condition of a great payday. Amid the growing hype, Demetrious Johnson gave his prediction for the potential heavyweight clash. He emphasized Aspinall’s youth and ability, suggesting that the young fighter has what it takes to challenge Jones.

Johnson stated, “I think Tom Aspinall has the speed, the athleticism, and the power to give Jon Jones problems. Tom Aspinall is still young and getting better, but I think this version of Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall is very… Tom Aspinall can beat him. I feel comfortable saying that because you have somebody who’s gonna take the fight to Jon Jones and not be scared.”

What’s your take on Jon Jones’ next move? Will he risk his legacy by facing Tom Aspinall, or could we see him retire if Dana White doesn’t allow him to fight Alex Pereira? Who would you prefer to see ‘Bones’ face: Aspinall or Pereira? Share your thoughts below.
