Charles Oliveira is amused to see the drama unpacking in the UFC’s lightweight division. Ominous reports have recently emerged that indicate the probable shelving of the comeback fight of Conor McGregor against Michael Chandler. ‘The Notorious’ who last fought against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2020 gave his fans high hopes of a comeback match this year. But those took a hit with the recent reports suggesting otherwise.

The 34-year-old marked his entry into the UFC fold after a prolonged absence as he helmed the coaching duties at TUF Season 31. With traditionally the coaches clashing at the end of the season, a potential bout against ‘Iron’ was on the cards. While the USADA regulations remained the only plausible hurdle, the fight finds itself in deep waters with the Irish fighter seemingly losing interest in his opponent. The cancellation of the fight might shift the dynamics of the lightweight division and ‘do Bronx’ is wondering how.

The Brazilian fighter, who recently snapped Beneil Dariush’s 8-win streak at UFC 289, reacted to the Atkins Insider report. The report suggested that ‘Mystic Mac’ lost interest in fighting the American fighter. Further, it mentioned that the promotion is already working on plan B and screening a bunch of hopeful opponents.

The BJJ ace, who currently finds himself on the cusp of another title shot and a rematch against Islam Makhachev, in his tweet responded with a thinking face emoji as he himself is yet to wrap his head around the development.

He wrote, “🤔”

Accepting a fight against the UFC cash cow might beef up the bank amount of any UFC fighter. Oliveira might seize the opportunity if presented as he has established himself as a fighter who never denies an offered fight.

However, the biggest thorn in McGrgeor’s comeback is the USADA rules and their compliance. The Dublin-born has to meet the USADA cutoff date before making a trip to Octagon.

The Irishman is required to enter USADA’s drug-testing pool for at least six months before he fights. If he plans to meet Chandler at UFC 296, which is the promotion’s final PPV of 2023, he is on a tight schedule.

The USADA was in contact with McGregor regarding his samples last month and it remains to be seen whether he can make the deadline.
