Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili deserve to fight for the UFC’s bantamweight gold next, more so than Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera. This is what former UFC two-division champion and commentator Daniel Cormier believes.

At the main event of UFC 292, current UFC bantamweight king Sean O’Malley knocked former champ, Sterling, to secure a second-round victory. But just two months after ‘Sugar’s victory, the speculations are all around for his first title defense. And if Cormier is to be believed, the most deserving candidate for the title shot are the teammates ‘Aljo’ and Merab. But the veteran fears that this belief of his might not be mutual.

Daniel Cormier ‘sure’ about Chito Vera bypassing Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Daniel Cormier might have spilled the beans on UFC’s plans for their 135 lb division. According to the former champion, he believes that Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili are the most deserving candidates for the title shot. However, the former Olympian believes that instead of the Serra-Longo Fight Team members, it’s Marlon Vera who will end up fighting for the title next.

In Cormier’s own words: “Is it unfair that Aljamain doesn’t get a title fight right away? Probably. With all those defenses, absolutely, I’m taking that back, no probably, absolutely, Aljamain should get a title fight; he should get a rematch, but he won’t because O’Malley’s not looking back. Does Marab deserve a title fight? Absolutely. Does Marab deserve a title fight more than Chito Vera? Absolutely. What’s the likelihood of Chito Vera fighting before Marab and Aljo for the title? Pretty damn certain.”

As per Cormier, this belief is based on the shared history between Vera and O’Malley. For those unaware, Chito handed O’Malley the only loss of his career at UFC 252. And according to Cormier, this gives UFC a perfect plot to pit the two men for the division’s gold. Something that a possible rematch with ‘Funkmaster’ or a clash with ‘The Machine’ would lack despite the two men standing ahead of Vera in the rankings. And this is why the American Kickboxing Academy seems so sure of his belief.

Cormier’s belief might be based on Dana White’s feelings toward the teammates

Before Aljamain Sterling’s loss to Sean O’Malley, a similar confusion broke out when the then-top contender, Merab Dvalishvili, refused to face his teammate. In MMA, few things complicate the situation as much as two fighters in the same division. Especially when one is a champ, and the other is a top contender. In fact, this is the same reason Cormier moved down to light heavyweight as his teammate Cain Velasquez was active as a heavyweight fighter then. Sterling, too, had teased a similar plan.

But before he could move to the featherweight, he dropped the belt to O’Malley. Even though Sterling is no longer the champ, Dvalishvili does not seem interested in bypassing ‘Funkmaster’s shot at a rematch. However, this gesture of friendship is not going too well with Dana White. The UFC president believes a fighter should take fights regardless of who their opponent might be. And if Merab seems firm in his decision, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Chito getting a pass over the two men. A situation Cormier seems to be envisioning in his video.
