Colby Covington’s decision to jump into the tiff between Gilbert Burns and Chael Sonnen may have backfired on the former interim welterweight champion! Known for his sharp tongue and provocative takes, Sonnen found himself in hot water after casually claiming Burns had retired on an episode of the ‘Good Guy/Bad Guy’ podcast that he hosts with Daniel Cormier. But even he couldn’t have predicted what would happen next.

Burns, fueled by indignation, didn’t let Sonnen’s remarks slide. He retaliated by leaking the UFC legend’s phone number on X, sparking chaos. Though the post was swiftly deleted, the damage was done. Calls flooded Sonnen’s phone like an unrelenting tide. But instead of retreating, Sonnen embraced the madness. He turned the fiasco into a fan Q&A, proving he could weather the storm with a smile.

However, Colby Covington had a different take on the entire situation. In a quote from his Twitch livestream, shared on Instagram by Verdict MMA, Covington stated, “I’ll make sure Gilbert Burns never shows his face in America again after how badly I beat him. I’ll get justice for Uncle Chael.”

That wasn’t all, Covington further indicated, “That’s really messed up. Now, he’s getting tons of people calling him with stupid s—, saying stupid pranks. It’s a security concern. Gilbert, that was just very immature. What are we in high school dude? Be a grown a– man, dude.”

Predictably, the MMA world had opinions, and lots of them as the UFC welterweight turned the drama into a surprising challenge. Here’s a look at what the fans had to say about Colby Covington wanting to get “justice” for Chael Sonnen!

Fans call on Colby Covington to “retire” as jab at Gilbert Burns leads to an uproar against welterweight star online

Is Gilbert Burns the fighter to finally silence Colby Covington's bold claims once and for all?

Have an interesting take?

Colby Covington’s remarks in the aftermath of his recent UFC Tampa loss to Joaquin Buckley didn’t land well with the fans. While Chael Sonnen handled the coaching duties for the American wrestler for his first fight back after a year-long hiatus, ‘Chaos’ ended up losing the fight due to a doctor stoppage in the third round. Now, having lost 3 out of his last 4 bouts, fans believe that Gilbert Burns will hand Covington another brutal loss if they ever clash inside the Octagon.

“gilbert by finish any way he wants”

However, some fans believe the matchup should have been made years ago when both men were at their peak in the fight game. Burns is now 38 years old, while Covington is 36. In fact, ‘Durinho’ is currently on a 3-fight losing streak, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the UFC and Dana White to set up this clash and see which veteran manages to break their string of losses.

“This fight would have been so much fun 4 years ago”

Other fans also agreed with the sentiment as they pointed out that it would be an ideal matchup in the welterweight division for the old guard to regain some of their glory. Burns holds the no.8 spot in the welterweight rankings at the moment, while Covington is now at no.9. So if this clash does materialize, it will definitively answer the questions about who deserves to remain in the top 10. What do you think?

“this is a very smart fight to make… see what last old contender has it in them more.”

Meanwhile, Covington also got blasted as the fans claimed his response was just a way to ‘poach’ Chael Sonnen’s fandom. Even Daniel Cormier pointed out that ‘Chaos’ and his persona will now take a significant hit after his UFC Tampa loss as he confessed on his YouTube channel, “How does he handle all those people now coming for his head? They’re all gonna come for him, and they can because Colby has come for them,” said Cormier.

“Trying to steal Chael fans because he doesn’t have any of his own left”

As such, some fans even called for Covington to hang up his gloves and walk away from the sport as they’d lost all interest in watching him fight again. The polarizing welterweight star even refused to admit that he had lost the fight at UFC Tampa as he stated in the post-fight press conference, “I feel like the doctor is the one that beat me tonight. I didn’t feel like I lost to another opponent.”

“Just retire. No one really wants to see Colby again.”

In the end, this saga has given MMA fans plenty to talk about. From Sonnen’s mistake to Burns’ revenge and Covington’s crusade, the drama has drawn a lot of attention to the situation. The fallout from this feud has been as fiery as a title fight, but it leaves more questions than answers. While it remains to be seen if the fight becomes a reality, can Colby Covington redeem his waning career and silence his critics with a victory over Gilbert Burns? Or will ‘Durinho’, despite his recent struggles, proving he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
