The UFC was a boys’ club for a long time. Over twenty years ago, then-UFC President Dana White had stated unequivocally that women would never fight in the UFC. This changed after White met Ronda Rousey and was impressed enough that he decided to have women’s divisions in the promotion.

And now, Laura Sanko has broken another glass ceiling by becoming the first woman to call a UFC pay-per-view event in the modern era. Dana White even called her the “Ronda Rousey of commentating” and in a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Sanko spoke about getting the opportunity and the ‘Surreal’ experience.

Sanko told TMZ Sports she found it unreal that she was given the opportunity. She said that although she had been the first woman to commentate on Dana White’s Contender Series and the first woman to call a Fight Night in February, she did not expect to be chosen to call a PPV event. “The Chicago native revealed that she was at peace with the idea that calling PPVs was an exclusive club of people like Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier, which she would not be part of.

“It’s really surreal, and you know I’ve had a few of these moments that sort of have built up to this. When, you know, I was the first woman to call any fight but it was on [Dana White’s] Contender Series so it was sort of like a big asterisk. And then, of course, you know, in February first woman to call fight night… and to be honest with you I wasn’t sure if I would ever get tapped to call a pay-per-view and I was, I wanted to, but I was sort of at peace with the idea of maybe that being an elite club that I might not ever get to participate in. I wasn’t sure,” Sanko told TMZ Sports.

‘Fancy’ stated that she had not asked the UFC for a PPV spot, and although she got to know about it some months ago, the actual call was very unexpected for her. Many women, female fighters, and fathers of young daughters have reached out to her, praising her for being a role model to the young girls. Sanko said that she was taking this responsibility seriously and was glad to be given the opportunity.

“It’s not something I was asking for, it’s not something that was discussed. I knew about it months ago but when the call came, it was a huge surprise to me. The reaction has been tremendous and I can’t tell you how many women have reached out, female fighters, [and] a lot of dads saying you know my daughter looks to you as an example,” Sanko said.
