Where is David Onama from? Ethnicity and nationality

David “Silent Assassin” Onama proudly represents Kyangwali, Uganda, and he has never shied away from showcasing it. Whenever he steps into the Octagon, the Ugandan flag accompanies him—solid proof of his pride in his roots. In fact, Onama made history in 2021 by becoming the first Ugandan fighter to compete in the UFC, debuting at UFC Fight Night 196 against Mason Jones.

Although he didn’t win that fight, Onama bounced back spectacularly. His first UFC win came at UFC Fight Night: Dos Anjos vs. Fiziev, against Gabriel Benítez in the very first round, despite suffering a punch to the eye. That victory was twofold, sweet – it earned him a $50k bonus, and more importantly, he became the first Ugandan fighter to win in the UFC.

Onama moved to the United States at the age of 10, but his love for fighting was already rooted deep. He would often get into fights at school, and he was obsessed with watching UFC matches.

However, details about his religion remain undisclosed. While Uganda is a predominantly Christian nation, David Onama has not publicly shared his religious beliefs or affiliations.

But while he may not speak about religion, he is vocal about his pride and responsibility as Uganda’s pioneer in the UFC.

Following his victory over Benítez, Onama opened up about what it means to represent his country on the global stage and stated, “I have the entire country behind me supporting me; you don’t know how much it means to me. I hope a lot of people from back home see that they can get to the UFC as well. I want to lead the way for them, and the love I have gotten from people from Uganda is surreal.”
