Can Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier ever truly bury the hatchet, or is the rivalry eternal?

“I will literally kill you if you did some silly sh*t” It doesn’t take a bright verbal pugilist to agree that this statement by Jon Jones reflects the amount of “blood” he had with his fellow light heavyweight great, Daniel Cormier. While everyone is aware of their Octagon battles by now, the larger question that looms is— Do you come back from something this bad?

Many may agree that things between the duo are much better than they were 10 years ago. But we got a better picture of this fabled rivalry as Daniel Cormier recently sat down with Chael Sonnen to discuss the present state of his affairs with his most vicious competitor. Let’s see what he had to say.

On the latest episode of the Good Guy/Bad Guy podcast with Chael Sonnen, Daniel Cormier made it clear: “We are not buddies, just—I don’t like!” Cormier was recalling an encounter at UFC 306, where Jon Jones attempted to shake his hand on stage. Despite Jones’ gesture, Cormier, the former dual champion, has always been open about his distaste for the idea. While he’s moved on from the intense rivalry with Jones, he doesn’t see a reason to engage in friendly gestures.

In addition, DC reflected on both his rivalry with Jones and his upcoming UFC 309 bout. Having faced both Jones and Miocic, Cormier provided valuable insights into what fans can expect from the legacy bout. However, the conversation eventually circled back to his well-known rivalry with Jones, prompting Cormier to share his unfiltered thoughts on where he stands with Jones today.

“You know, one of the things people always ask me when Jon Jones fights—and it hasn’t been often since he fought Ciryl Gane—is, ‘How are you going to handle being in the same room with him?” Cormier told Sonnen. “I’ve seen Jon Jones at fights; he’ll give me a fist bump and all that.” But he emphasized that the rivalry is behind him now: “I don’t anticipate sitting with Jon Jones at any point in New York City. But if I did, I think that ship has passed, man. I’m just not that person anymore.”

It’s clear that, while Cormier has moved on from the rivalry, he’s still uninterested in a friendship with Jones—a testament to the fiery history between these two champions.
