Several fighters, including Tom Aspinall, are in favor of Stipe Miocic to seal the deal against Jon Jones, primarily due to his experience of being a career heavyweight contender. However, one of the UFC’s resident firefighter’s former rivals and key UFC broadcast figure Daniel Cormier, claims to know the biggest weak spots in his fighting style, which could prove detrimental in his quest to become a three-time champion when he enters the Octagon to butt heads against Jon Jones.
Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic had a grand trilogy of fights with Miocic outweighing DC by 2 to 1. For the unversed, it was the former 2-time heavyweight champion whom ‘DC’ defeated to become a double champion back in 2018. During his time preparing and analyzing Miocic’s “game” before their first clash, he noticed that the Cleveland native makes a consistent error during clinches.
“As we’re getting ready for Stipe Miocic fight and we were breaking em’ down, we saw some things in his game that we knew we can take advantage of and that was in the clinch,” said Daniel Cormier on a UFC 309 breakdown video on ESPN MMA’s YouTube channel. He’d further add about Miocic’s glaring mistake of getting his hands to go down low when he escaped a clinch, and that’s something that the former double champion believes could come in pretty handy for Jon Jones as Miocic would not have his head protected.

“As Stipe and I would come together, I was finding a lot of success landing punches whenever he’d exit because when he exits, he tends to leave his left hand low. And he was along the clinch position to kind of play themselves out as they went,” Daniel Cormier further added while citing how he managed to drop the former 2-time heavyweight champion. “Stipe Miocic’s left hand was always low. He was trying to control my overhand with his thumb-blocking, but instead, you wrap that punch around that low straight arm and if you land with enough impact, that’s exactly what you get [knock down Miocic].”

Stipe Miocic might want to take notice of Daniel Cormier’s analysis, but he doesn’t look so worried about Jon Jones. Things are already heating up between the two as the 42-year-old recently fired some shots with a jibe that annoyed ‘Bones’.

Dana White’s promotion recently released their new ‘Countdown’ video for the UFC 309 pay-per-view, where a confident Stipe Miocic welcomed his latest challenge with a rather incendiary statement. “Bring it on b-tch. Bring it on b-tch,” he said, and it wasn’t a surprise when Jones, who’d have more words of praise for Miocic than anything negative, fired back at the Ohio native, warning him that receipt would come when they got inside the Octagon.
“See the disrespect, you calling me a b-tch, Stipe. The disrespect didn’t have to happen. You’re gonna wish you didn’t say that,” Jon Jones stated in a video on social media. In another tweet, ‘Bones’ would further state, “Hiring black fighters to mimic me will not help you, Stipe. And you shouldn’t have called me a b-tch. The disrespect wasn’t necessary. Let’s play.”
