Former longtime light heavyweight champion Jon Jones showed why he’s one of the greatest by making a quick work of Ciryl Gane to claim the vacant heavyweight title in Saturday night’s headliner UFC 285 in Las Vegas after a three-year layoff. He dominated the second division with such ease that it cemented his legacy. While the MMA world is showering accolades on ‘Jonny Bones’, his former opponent and arch-rival Daniel Cormier has a warning for him.
Right after Jones’ spectacular comeback victory, the discussion of his next fight has begun, and he is now touted to face heavyweight royalty Stipe Miocic later this year. Cormier believes that Jones shouldn’t make the mistake of counting the 40-year-old to be an easy game and that Miocic will bring in some real trouble for the 35-year-old Jones in their matchup.

Daniel Cormier, just like everyone else, is impressed by his arch-rival Jon Jones‘ incredible comeback performance, but he feels that Jones shouldn’t let this get to his head ahead of his next fight, which is reported to be against Stipe Miocic. ‘DC’ feels that the 40-year-old will ‘absolutely’ be a great challenge and pose some real threats to Jones’ legacy.
“This will be a much tougher fight. And, honestly, most thought, it should be Stipe Miocic in the octagon tonight. But Ciryl Gane was the one that was chosen to fight. Many thought he could present some real challenges to Jon Jones. But, it was proven very quickly that they weren’t on the same level,” said Cormier.
DC added, “Stipe Miocic though, will be much tougher for Jon Jones. Because, not only does he have wrestling to defend takedowns, he also is a champion himself with a lot of championship experience.”
Moreover, Stipe Miocic has a message for Jon Jones that makes it abundantly obvious that he intends to damage Jones’ record and brand.
Stipe Miocic has violent plans for ‘Jonny Bones’
Stipe Miocic had a front-row seat to witness Jon Jones become the new heavyweight champion in the UFC 285 main event. His biggest concern, however, was getting his own shot at the title. With UFC President Dana White promising him a bout against Jones later this year, Miocic is more determined than ever to become champion once again. Although he congratulated Jones on his victory, he also warned Jones that facing him will be a messy situation.
“It’s a fight, he won, good for him. Hats off, but unfortunately he’s got to fight me in July,” the Cleveland native told ESPN.
