Islam Makhachev is ready to fight and is up for the next title contender. Makhachev (25-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC) said he wanted to compete for his 155-pound title in March but there was no opponent available. Makhachev stated he was training hard and waiting for the fight offer date. Then came ‘The Diamond’ Dustin Poirier who scored a brutal second knockout of Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299. Makhachev declared that he wanted to fight three times in 2024 and so was ready to fight against Dustin.

Dustin Poirier is still in title conversations and was reportedly in talks with UFC to fight Makhachev at UFC 284 after Oliveira pulled out because of an injury. Daniel Cormier called for a third title shot for The Diamond and also stated that by defending against Poirier, Islam can become the next UFC mega star.

In a recent video on DC’s YouTube channel, DC gave his thoughts about the upcoming fight. He said, “Because in WWF and WWE back in the day you had the established stars when they were ready to retire they would get beat by the new up-and-coming guy and then they would take that shine it feels like…. Because it feels like this is the way to help and further make Islam Makhachev a star.”

According to the UFC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight champion, Islam could secure a winning title and become the star of the UFC arena. He explained that for one fighter to become a star they have to fight another star. This happened with the likes of McGregor and Dustin where The Diamond became a star after beating Conor.

DC also stated that UFC should put Dustin with Islam. He thinks that the next fight will not be between Poirier and McGregor. He also explained the comparison by saying, “Michael Chandler has been in the UFC for a very short period, he has immediately become one of the biggest stars in the sport. People love him. He doesn’t lose anything when he loses fights. So that was the comparison.” However, even if DC wants Islam to fight Poirier, Makhachev was pretty disrespectful to the man with 28 wins.

Islam Makhachev insulted Poirier recently

After winning his fight with a brilliant knockout, Poirier made waves on the UFC front. He appeared on Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour Show, and he spoke to the host about fighting Islam Makhachev in June. Makhachev did not react pleasantly to this. He accepted the fight but also looked down on Poirier as a top contender.

He said, ‘“I know Dustin does not deserve the title fight, but we don’t have any option right now. Everybody is busy. I want to fight. … He’s beaten a lot of top guys.” His words were pretty dismissive and implied Dustin was an unworthy opponent, but he also had some mild praise for his accomplishments.
