“I know everyone wants fight news, but I do know what’s happening. I’ve been sworn to secrecy for a little bit, so stay tuned.” Tom Aspinall said these words in a TNT Sports video have lit up the MMA world. Fans started buzzing about the Brit’s return to the Octagon and hoped that undisputed would be on the line. But, just to stir the pot, Chael Sonnen hinted he might face Ciryl Gane for the interim title instead. While it’s a fun matchup, Daniel Cormier believes it could absolutely sabotage the planned Jon Jones fight.
Tom Aspinall’s UFC run has been kind of strangely good. Most of his fights end in two minutes, but the big-name matchups just don’t seem to happen. One that fans kept asking for is him vs. Ciryl Gane. There’s been plenty of back-and-forth between them. Most notably, Aspinall flew to Paris with his newly won interim belt, hoping for a face-off, but nothing came of it. Then UFC 304 looked like the moment, but it fell through. Gane had already signed on to film a Netflix project, and the British Juggernaut defended his belt against Curtis Blaydes.
Now, as the rumors go, Tom Aspinall might finally be stepping in for a massive clash. The heavyweight unification bout is still in question, but meanwhile, the unfinished business against Cyril Gane has also emerged as a credible option. That matchup still has a lot of heat. But here’s the catch. Daniel Cormier thinks there’s a real issue that could throw the Jones fight into serious jeopardy if the Brit somehow loses this fight.

‘DC’ in the Good Guy/Bad Guy show said, “Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane have this beef going back years. Ciryl Gane beats Tai Tuivasa, in Paris. No sells Ciryl Gane, okay, no sells Tom Aspinall, while he was sitting right next to the cage. Tom doesn’t seem to wanna fight him. But bigger than all of that, Jon beat Ciryl Gane in a minute and 09 seconds. What if he wins? Everything is off the table, that’s my problem! Because you don’t want Ciryl Gane, who is still one of the best heavyweights in the world.”
He added, “He is as talented as anyone. He can beat anyone, if he goes and beats Tom Aspinall. Now you never get Jones fighting Aspinall! You want Aspinall if he does get expose to happen in October against Jon Jones. You don’t want it to happen before Chael! That’s what I have problem with.”

Nothing’s official yet, but if this fight actually happens, Daniel Cormier might have a point to worry about. MMA is wild like that—anything can happen, especially in the heavyweight division, where one punch can flip the script in a second. Aspinall might walk in as the favorite, sure, but this is still Ciryl Gane we’re talking about. If the Frenchman somehow pulls off the upset and hands Aspinall a loss, you can bet Jon Jones’s laugh will be heard all the way from Albuquerque.

Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall is easily one of the biggest superfights fans are hoping to see this year. The hype around it is so massive that any other fight for the interim champ just doesn’t feel as big, and honestly, comes with more risk than reward. At this point, it’s not just the fans who are excited—even the legendary Georges St-Pierre has voiced his excitement about the potential showdown.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Tom Aspinall risking it all by facing Ciryl Gane before a potential Jon Jones showdown?

Georges St-Pierre’s excitement over Jon Jones vs Tom Aspinall
When Georges St-Pierre talks, people in MMA actually stop and listen. ‘Rush’ has been a solid voice when it comes to breaking down big fights and his picking Jon Jones as his gladiator for a Roman Colosseum says a lot about the respect he’s got for the current heavyweight champ. But the former two-division champion weighed on the fact that legends like Jones can’t outrun time forever, acknowledging Tom Aspinall’s surreal run in the heavyweight division.

During an interview with Bloody Elbow, St-Pierre said, “I mean, you talk about legacy, Jon Jones is probably the best fighter that ever lived. If I have to choose someone in his prime that I put in the Colosseum, hand-to-hand, I think it would be Jon Jones. It’s hard to deny that. However, nobody beats time and Tom Aspinall is on a hell of a run so it’s to see how they’re gonna match. It’s hard to say. As a fan, I want to see this fight, I would really like to see this fight but I think Tom is very hungry and it’s up to Jon to see if he still wants to do this and if the UFC can compensate him good because I think he deserves it so it’s going to be a hell of a fight.”
Things are definitely a bit unclear in the UFC right now, especially with Tom Aspinall making his comeback, and Jon Jones being perceivably aloof. So, what’s next? Will Aspinall get a shot at Jones, or will he defend his interim belt again against Ciryl Gane? Could he join Arlovski Arlovski and Renan Barao with two interim title defenses? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments down below.
