With his first heavyweight title defense against Stipe Miocic approaching, Jon Jones has fight fans on the edge of their seats. The numerous callouts from the interim heavyweight champion are another reason he’s in the news. But “Bones” hasn’t said anything about taking on Tom Aspinall just yet. So, what does the future hold for the ‘Honey Badger’?

It seems there’s only one possibility that would force Jones to take on Aspinall. Former two-division champion Daniel Cormier, in his recent podcast, shared the exact details of what needs to be done. Let us take a look at what he had to say.

The UFC world is buzzing with anticipation as two titans prepare to clash at UFC 295—Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic. Both fighters are stepping back into the octagon after extended layoffs, each with something to prove. Jon Jones, the reigning heavyweight champion, has been out of action since defeating Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 in March 2023. His return has been delayed after he tore a pectoral muscle during training in October last year, keeping him sidelined for 20 months. Meanwhile, Miocic’s hiatus has been even longer, with his last fight dating back to March 2021, when he suffered a knockout loss to Francis Ngannou at UFC 260.

As the countdown to UFC 295 continues, MMA legends Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen took to YouTube to discuss the implications of this monumental showdown. Cormier, a longtime rival of Jones, shared a tantalizing scenario that has fight fans on edge: What happens if Miocic dethrones Jones and takes the title? According to ‘DC,’ a loss could open the door for another epic battle. “Jones vs. Tom Aspinall is more likely to happen if Stipe wins,” Cormier said. “If Jones loses and feels like he has something to prove, it’s more likely he’ll fight Aspinall before retiring. But if he wins, he’ll go off into the sunset.”

Cormier, who’s had a storied rivalry with Jones, isn’t thrilled about the prospect of Jones hanging up the gloves. The former two-division champion believes ‘Bones’ still has a lot to offer the sport, despite his talks of retirement. With the UFC interim champion Tom Aspinall calling out Jones, ‘DC’ feels there’s more unfinished business to settle. During a conversation with Ben Askren, Cormier expressed his frustration, saying that Jones leaving the game now would be a loss not just for him, but for the sport itself.

Daniel Cormier recently sat down with Ben Askren on his YouTube channel to discuss the UFC 309. No doubt a UFC 309 conversation is incomplete without mentioning the main fight. Two of the biggest names in the sport, Stipe Miocic and Jon Jones, will finally have the opportunity to settle their differences. The pair were scheduled to face each other at UFC 295, but an untimely injury to Jones forced him out of the clash. While speaking to Askren, Cormier pointed out that he still feels Jones has much to offer.

While he may be returning after a long lay-off, Cormier still believes he is the best. He said,  “Dude, hearing Jones say, or hearing the rumor that Jones said ‘This is it for me’, it sucks, because I do believe that there is some work left to be done with Aspinall, mainly. I don’t think, I don’t think anyone else warrants him sticking around. I really don’t because we saw what he did to Ciryl Gane.” Cormier feels Jones has lost the love of fighting and doesn’t want to challenge himself anymore.

In an ideal scenario, fans would want to see Jones taking on Aspinall for once in his career. But the way things are turning out to be it looks like a distant dream at the moment.
