Alex Pereira’s phenomenal victory against Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC 307 only added to his prestige in the fighting community. However, the performance didn’t quite impress Pereira’s former opponent, Jamahal Hill. ‘Sweet Dreams’ was caught yawning as ‘Poatan’ battled ‘The War Horse’ with multiple breathtaking moments. Needless to say, the world of mixed martial arts lashed out at Hill for his act. But the MMA realm also brought up doubts over the fact that Hill might be campaigning for a rematch.
Their doubts look to be true. The two had already faced each other at UFC 300, and it was, of course, ‘Poatan’ who rose victorious with a KO in the first round. And now, Hill took to X and confirmed Dana White had provided a new contract and name for him. The opponent might be none other than Pereira. He wrote, “Contract is already on the way, name has already hit the desk… class will be in session soon.”
But the talks about his yawn at UFC 307 didn’t fade. Hill was forced to come forth with an explanation, and he did exactly that. Taking to his talk show, he said, “Main event. That’s hilarious. You all see a clip with no context and just y’all just be ready to talk s–t and just attack and come disrespectful as ever. The yawn at the end was, was it entertaining? Yes! Was I impressed? No! I’m not impressed.”

Nevertheless, ‘Sweet Dreams’ was pretty content with Alex Pereira’s victory. Nevertheless, he made a surprising admission. The light heavyweight fighter suggested that he wouldn’t mind if the Brazilian lost against Magomed Ankalaev. All Jamahall Hill wanted to do was defeat Pereira, without any regard for the light heavyweight championship belt. Hill continued, “To be honest with you, I’m glad Alex won, because I want him to be as big of a giant in your minds as possible in the next time I face him. At this point, I don’t care if he, he can go on Magomed next if he fights him. And he can lose. He can lose. That’s the fight that I want. Alright? I don’t want the belt. I want that fight. That’s the fight that I want.”

But wait! There’s more to the story. Not too long before the man with the hands of stone fought Jiri Prochazka, Hill claimed that Pereira, in fact, cheated his way to victory at UFC 300. Surprisingly, even Joe Rogan agreed to it. Let’s see what it was all about!

Did Jamahal Hill's yawn show disrespect, or is he just not impressed by Pereira's win?
Have an interesting take?
Back in June 2024, Hill kept on saying that he was disheartened by the way Pereira got the win over him. There was a moment when it seemed like Hill accidentally hit Pereira in the groin. ‘Poatan’ signaled the referee, but instead told him that it was all good and he could continue to fight. However, that was the moment when the Brazilian closed the gap between him and his opponent and sent a powerful fist towards Hill. This caught ‘Sweet Dreams’ off-guard and he was sent to the dream realm.
Etching closer during what seemed like an official time off was what angered Hill. Taking to his talk show, he said, “Why’d you signal to the ref then in the first place? What was the point of you signaling to the ref in that moment if the kick didn’t hit you low and you didn’t want it stopped? Yet you grab low. You signal to the ref to let him know that you got kicked. But all of a sudden, you don’t want the fight to be stopped.”
Even the beloved UFC color commentator stood in Hill’s support. During a conversation with Max Holloway on episode #155 of the JRE MMA Show, Rogan pointed out that Hill got a point. He said, “I’m not making any excuses for Jamahal, and Jamahal can take a loss as good as anybody…but he’s got a point here. It’s not a perfect point because they had engaged again but Pereira had closed that gap to a point where Jamahal wasn’t letting him do that early…”

Nevertheless, the beef between the light heavyweight fighters can come to a resolution, as ‘Sweet Dreams’ hinted at a rematch against the man with the hands of stone. With no interest in the light heavyweight belt, Hill has fixed his sights on finding a way and defeat the LHW champion. All that the fighting community needs to do now, is wait and let the story unfold.
