Is Conor McGregor's UFC career over, or is he just biding his time for a grand return?

July 10, 2024 marked three years since Conor McGregor entered the Octagon. Now, the signings are pointing to the Irishman sitting out at least till the four-year mark before he competes again if he competes again. Why?

T͏he ͏two͏-divi͏͏si͏on c͏ham͏pion͏ should have ͏fought inside th͏e Oct͏agon͏ ͏b͏y now, but a͏ ͏toe in͏jury͏ delayed his retu͏͏r͏n. Shou͏ld͏n’͏t tha͏t inj͏u͏ry be a ͏mi͏nor i͏ss͏ue, ͏tho͏ugh? Michael Chandler, Conor McGregor’s opponent has finally moved on!

The show will go on without you, even if your name is Conor McGregor. The former double champion was irate when Dana White announced Charles Oliveira vs. Michael Chandler for UFC 309. ‘Mystic Mac’ had been stringing ‘Iron’ along for the better part of two years before the UFC 303 fight announcement came. But the cancelation over McGregor’s injured pinky toe was the last straw for the Missouri native.

T͏his ͏setba͏ck deepl͏y affected Ch͏andler͏, who had risk͏ed his career in hopes of facin͏g the former two-divi͏sion wor͏ld cham͏pion͏. Intere͏stingly, UFC CBO H͏unter Campbell ͏had ͏warne͏d him that waiting for McGregor could have its own͏ consequences.

“I could have, at any given time, the first moment that Hunter called me, said we were tough, that it was going to be called in July or August, whatever it was going to be. The first moment he called me and said, ‘Hey, we are going to push it to this, it’s not happening,’ I could have said, ‘No,” said Chandler in an interview with the media.

What’s more insulting was how Dana White made it clear that McGregor would not be Chandler’s next fight (referring to UFC 309) but Chandler would be McGregor’s. It seems the Irishman is at the mercy of the promotion now.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Conor McGregor's UFC career over, or is he just biding his time for a grand return?

Have an interesting take?

Interestingly, Chandler did issue a callout for Conor McGregor at UFC 309 but is he sure about his comeback? Certainly not. The UFC might book ‘Iron’ to go on another fight against someone like Dan Hooker in the future but who knows. Regardless, even Dana White is unsure about the return of ‘the Notorious.’

Dana White is almost always silent when it comes to Conor McGregor’s return

Before Hunter Campbell͏, ͏i͏t was Dana ͏White who advised Michae͏l Ch͏a͏ndler not to waste his career waiting for ͏s͏ome͏one who might never return to the fighting a͏rena. The UFC CEO has time and time again asserted that it’s not difficult to deal with Conor McGregor but the amount of money that he has made might be stopping him from getting back inside the Octagon ever again.

When asked about his return at the UFC 309 post-fight press conference, the UFC CEO emphasized that he is not seeing Conor McGregor making his UFC return for at least a year, “Conor’s gonna come back in late ’25. So, there’s a lot of time before we can figure out who’s gonna fight Conor, “ said Dana White.

Well, before UFC 309, the UFC CEO emphasized that he was sure McGregor would return at the end of next year, “I think Conor and Chandler both like that fight. When Conor comes back, which I see being sometime in the later part of next year, we’ll see where everybody’s at and what’s going on and we’ll figure out who faces Conor,” White revealed on the Jim Rome show.

“Dana White has a been boxing promoter his whole career. All these nut riders need to do their research. His TV show failed. Couldn’t sell 4K tickets in Dublin with that useless Irish boxer he’s promoting. And he is not fighters first. He’s Dana first. Builds you up and tears you down. Now Conor McGregor is hostage. Free Conor,” said Paul on his X handle.

The UFC is also nearing the end of their broadcasting deal with ESPN and is on the lookout for new suitors. Granted, they have big stars, but is there one bigger than Conor McGregor? Is the promotion looking to tie McGregor down to a new contract and use him as a Trump card in negotiations? McGregor had indicated a while back that things were looking on the right track for a renewal, but he also wants the freedom to pursue avenues outside the UFC. This is something the promotion historically has been against. Case in point: Francis Ngannou.

Conor McGregor himself has reiterated he wants a comeback. Do you think that ‘Mystic Mac’ would ever embrace the Octagon again? Do you see cracks the UFC-McGregor relationship? State your thoughts in the comments below.
